He was smiling, a jagged, predatory expression that looked horrifying on such a small face.
"Lyra, move!" Tessa’s voice came from the tree line.
A sniper round hissed through the air, aimed not at the soldiers, but at the child in my arms. I twisted my body instinctively, taking the hit in my shoulder. The impact threw me backward into the slurry, but the pain was distant, muffled by the psychic roar echoing in my head.
"You shot him?" I gasped, looking at the blood on my sleeve.
