She Accused Me of Stealing My Own Business

She Accused Me of Stealing My Own Business

At a family dinner, Don Vincenzo’s new pet, a dancer named Ava, came for me. She puffed out her chest and slammed a ledger on the long table. “Vincenzo, I accuse her! Skimming from the family business, our club ‘The Siren’s Song.’ Betraying the family!” Every eye in the room turned on me, sharp as knives. But Vincenzo, my boss… his face went hard. I almost pitied the little dancer who’d crawled her way out of Brooklyn. The “family business” she was talking about? It was my private club. A gift from my father. I just lent it to Vincenzo when he was starting out, to give him a respectable front. I lent it to him for two years, and now it’s family property?

I enjoyed this book immensely. I did initially have my doubts about how many chapters were taken up by Jia's first day but I liked the progress. It was beautifully written. Jia's journey from struggling 'single parent' with low self esteem to a woman loved and in love was really well thought out.

Loved this story of 2 people who showed real growth, evolving in a v. positive way bc of their emotional connection, determination to persevere under v. trying circumstanc. Yr treatment of anxiety & depression, particularly involving women was handled beautifully & with great clarity & sensitivity.

My Husband Came Back from the Dead

Later, I locked myself in the bathroom with his urn, sobbing uncontrollably, when I overheard his buddies talking through the open window. "Dude, you’re so cool blooded. Their Loss: My Adoption by Billionaire Father

Their Loss: My Adoption by Billionaire Father

After reuniting with my birth family, my wealthy biological father tossed me a black card and laid down one rule: I could spend as much as I wanted, but I was never to call him Dad—that title belonged only to his adoptive daughter. Clutching the black card, I cautiously bought myself a two-dollar-fifty ice cream cone. Just as I was happily licking the sweet ice cream, the adoptive daughter dropped to her knees before me. "Alice, are you mocking me because I can't even afford something that costs two-fifty in the future?" My brother immediately slapped me twice. "You have money now, but you can't split love. Natalie is my one and only sister!" Then my father splashed boiling water onto my face. "No disgraceful wretch deserves to be a Gervais." To punish me, they sent me off to Rimala, forced to work as a child laborer in the mines. Ten years later, I walked into a grand banquet hall with an ice cream in hand and came face-to-face with my brother, Ansel Gervais, dressed in a hand-tailored suit. "All these years and you're still a disgrace," he sneered, but I couldn't be bothered to argue. "Let go. My dad's waiting for me—and if I'm any later, the ice cream's going to melt." He looked down at me with contempt. "Dad? Who gave you permission to call him that? Natalie will forever be the only Gervais girl—no one can take that away from her!" I rolled my eyes. Who said I was talking about that cheap excuse for a father? I was talking about my adoptive father—the oil tycoon with an incurable sweet tooth. I was in a hurry to let him taste some ice cream.

Frequently Asked Questions

Terry Pratchett's narrators become characters themselves, which is half the magic. I've listened to Tony Robinson's versions and the newer ones with Stephen Briggs and Nigel Planer. They don't just read; they perform. Robinson, especially, has this manic energy that mirrors the footnotes perfectly—you can hear the wink in his voice when he delivers those asides. The humor on the page is in the timing and the juxtaposition of the absurd with the deadly serious, and a good narrator leans into that pause before the punchline. The audio format makes the satire feel more like a friend telling you a hilarious, rambling story about wizards and politics.

It also changes how you absorb the worldbuilding. Reading a dense footnote about the socioeconomic implications of dwarf bread is one thing; hearing it delivered with perfect comedic exasperation is another. You catch the sly references you might skim over visually. I found myself laughing out loud at bits I'd just smiled at when reading, just because of how the narrator savored the words.
