"So, do you still want to hear the story? Or are you too old for the pictures?" I didn't even get to see what the picture was like; I was too focused on Emma's presence. But I nod. "Go ahead. We'll see if this is any good." Smiling, Emma flips the book to the first page. I wiggle a bit to get comfortable and put a pillow behind my lower back. Emma waits for me to relax and close my eyes before starting to read, and she speaks softly for me. Her voice flows into my ears, but I barely hear her words. My focus is on the way her tone changes with different characters, the way her voice rises and falls, the way she chuckles breathily when she reads something amusing. She sounds divine to me.

She walked to the doorway, leaning against the frame. Liam sat on the edge of the bed. He opened the book. He cleared his throat. "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit..." His voice was deep, resonant, filling the small room. He didn't just read; he performed. He gave Gandalf a gravelly, wise voice. He made the dwarves sound grumpy and loud. Ethan was mesmerized. He lay perfectly still, his eyes fixed on Liam's face, hanging on every word.

Bella immediately snuggled into my side, her warm little head resting against my arm. I opened the book and started reading, using different voices for each character like she loved. The fox had a high, mischievous voice. The bear was deep and grumbly. The bunny spoke fast and nervously. Bella giggled, her eyes shining every time I made a particularly silly voice. I was halfway through a scene where the fox was trying to steal honey from the bees when I looked down at Bella, checking to see if she was still listening or already drifting off.

“Page thirty-three, sir.” “Read it for me.” He paced as I read. He disliked reading, and I suspected he might have some form of dyslexia. When he could, he used text-to-speech apps and dictation. He claimed he could think better if I read things out loud for him. So I did. After a few sentences, I got breathless. Cold sweat covered my neck, and warmth pooled in my stomach. Was I going to be sick? I stammered in the middle of a paragraph, and Mr. Toral paused his pacing.

"Miss Sasha will give you the book we are reading. We are on Chapter Eight." Sasha handed me a book, The Adventures of Adeline. "Thank you Miss Sasha." I smiled. "I hope this is okay with you." She looked shocked but said, "Yes. You are really good with the pups. Ashley clearly likes you." "All right pups! Chapter Eight." I said as I turned to the page. I started reading, Ashley leaned against my chest. As I read, I tried to use different voices for the characters. The pups laughed, I held their attention easily.
