I fidget with the fabric between my fingers, trying to figure out a way to say what I know that I have to.
“I just wanted to say: Thank you,” my voice quavers. “Y-You didn't have to save me, but... you did. I wasn't sure if I should be grateful before, but I-I realized today that I…” My voice trails off, frustration building at my inability to express myself clearly in his presence.
I swallow hard, drawing my lower lip between my teeth, desperate to maintain composure. “I should've thanked you a long time ago, and I'm sorry,” I finish, lifting my eyes to his back, willing him to turn around.
