Faith reached for my hand under the table, squeezing it gently as if to remind me I wasn’t alone.

I stared at him, unable to speak. My body trembled, but I didn’t know if it was fear or something else.
“Why me?” I whispered at last. “I never asked for this. I never wanted—” My voice cracked, and I stopped.
