Not entirely. It had the outline of a person, but its flesh was ashen, cracked like burned stone, and its eyes—its eyes were black pits, leaking threads of shadows that moved like living smoke. It was a revenant. Something dead that has been brought back to life. The air in the room shifted, the smell of dead and decay filled the room making us all gag. Then it spoke. “I have a message,” the creature started, its voice sounding dark, unnatural. It was something that was utterly wrong.

“This is crazy. Half-wolf, half-vampire? What was he trying to do, create some kind of monster?” As he spoke, his hand brushed a small switch on the table’s edge. A low hum filled the room, and overhead lights flickered on, bathing the space in harsh white light. The glow revealed something we hadn’t seen in the shadows. Rows of glass chambers along the back wall. Inside were bodies, pale and shriveled, their skin stretched tight over bones like they’d been drained dry. Their mouths hung open, fangs glinting faintly. “What the hell…” Ronan said, stepping back.

It was what she was going to be. “Do you know what a keeper is?” Veronica asked him, as she followed through the halls. “I heard about them when I was at war in the far away kingdom of Delmouth. They are dark creatures with an appetite for human bodily fluids. It will suck you dry and leave you as ashes.” Roger whimpered and she placed a hand on his back. It was a scary tale. “How do you kill them?” (where are they going?) “I did not hear of them being killed, only captured. You don’t want to know what for.” He said matter of factly.

A crimson glow, like boiling blood, pulsed outward, the air grew scorching, and sweat dripped freely from their foreheads. They stepped inside... the ceiling vanished, revealing the night sky screaming with stars. The polished black stone walls reflected the firelight like infernal mirrors. In the center of the room yawned a vast pit where the endless flames raged, producing thick smoke that clawed into their lungs. Upon arrival, I was surprised to find Drickblood there, with a retinue of demons. Across from my throne of thorns stands another, made of metal. The same material used to make the crown of the queen.

Said to be dangerous and corrupting, and it was here. Still, I kept going. The pull wasn’t logical but it was strong. The symbols grew brighter as I descended, casting strange shadows. I should’ve turned back but I didn’t. I had to know. The corridor ended at a large chamber. Inside, giant tanks lined the room each filled with a sickly green fluid. Floating in them were… creatures. Wolves, or what used to be wolves. Now mutated with misshapen limbs, oversized eyes, twisted bones. My breath caught. Horror rooted me in place.

The back door slammed open to the night chill redolent with pine and faraway smoke, and they disappeared into the dark, Aurelia’s screaming descending first into a barrage of muffled curses. On the stairs, I was confronted with the rogues, five of them now, snarling shadows oozing into my bright living room like blobs of ink. Their eyes were wild with hunger, feral gleam stabbed from gnarled fingers, knitted muscles heaving beneath scarred flesh.

The creature from the riddle… it was real. As the sound grew closer, a monstrous figure emerged from the shadows at the back of the chamber. It stood taller than any creature they had ever seen, its body a hulking mass of obsidian rock, its eyes burning with an eerie orange glow. A thick plume of vapor, cold enough to sting their skin, emanated from its monstrous nostrils. Fear threatened to paralyze Evie, but the image of the swirling darkness, as depicted by the Archivist, flashed in her mind. They couldn't let this creature stop them. They had to find a way past it.
