“Let’s speak inside. Away from wandering ears.” Inside the war room, the fire had been stoked again, its flames hungrily licking up the narrow chimney. Tessa, Dorian, Rylan, Kira, Galen and Alpha Ashmoon gathered around the central table. The maps had been pushed aside for now, replaced with reports - most of them splattered in blood. “I saw one of the beasts up close,” Galen said, arms crossed. “Metal laced through its bones. Eyes like rot made flesh. And magic - oily, thick. Not natural.”

“Maybe I am.” He inhaled sharply. Then shoved me backward — not violently, but roughly enough that I stumbled. “You’re playing with a monster,” he said. “I know.” “You don’t.” He stepped closer. “You will.” Right as he reached for me— The wall behind him exploded. Concrete. Steel. Dust. A creature leapt through the breach — tall, skeletal, with claws dripping black venom. A hound. Not canine. Not human. Somewhere in between. It lunged straight at me.

Black mist spilled out, swirling violently, filling the chamber with a metallic, sharp smell. Winter shouted, “Behind us!” A second crack tore open in the wall. Then a third. The base was reacting—responding to the awakening. It wasn’t just one seal. It was all of them. Gabriel turned pale. “The ruins weren’t the first lock. This place is built on top of another one.” Before I could process it, the mist shot upward and twisted into a shape—thin, skeletal, made of smoke and something darker. A shadow creature—bigger than the ones in the forest, more complete.

The shape of his head and his tentacle were not in proportion. Its tentacles looked disturbing and spooky. Its entire body looked as if covered in black soot and ashes. It looked like a creature of death. The creature had reptilian eyes; the Worst part was that it was covering himself with a black cloak, which means he had intelligence. Its tentacles were constantly wriggling on the floor of the altar. The minute he arrived, all the faces in the tower opened their eyes. Their stone-like eyes and facial muscles moved. They all looked at him. One stone-faced tower asked the Grotesque Creature, who was now bowing before them in the center of the altar.

He felt a little dizzy and started to wobble, he fell, hitting his bottocks on the solid flooring. Upon lifting his head he saw a vision. The creature was standing in front of him with two more additional heads, one filled with eyes and the other had the head of a mutilated Undine. He turned around only to be surprised by a large crowd of dead humans, piled up like dirty clothes. Blood flooded the passageway, he could see the fog that came out of the creature's mouth as it breathed. At the very end of the tunnel was a silhouette of a person wearing armour, a long cape-like structure connected to its back.

Adrian demanded. The floor beneath them rippled like the surface of deep water. Pillars of light rose around them, each one filled with rotating shards—memories, images, entire histories encoded in fragments. One pillar showed the riots after the leak. Another showed the Heart awakening for the first time. Another showed the creature’s original form—towering, luminous, whole—before it broke apart into the being they now saw. The creature gestured toward the pillars. “This place remembers all things.” “And it remembers the last time collapse occurred.”

The dark fluid spilled out across the concrete, and the creatures inside—the twisted, grafted abominations—began to twitch. Nomo stopped. He watched as one of the creatures opened its eyes. They weren't violet, and they weren't red. They were a milky, sightless white, leaking a black ichor that hissed as it touched the floor. The thing let out a sound that wasn't a scream or a growl, but a distorted, multi-tonal vibration that shattered the glass panels of the nearby offices. “Somito, tell me you’re clear!” Nomo shouted, his hand shaking as he raised his tablet to send the emergency burst.

I say. “Agreed, but it can’t come from us. We can’t have alphas looking our way, songbird,” he warns me. Shit, he is right. “I sense something alive in the back room, but otherwise it’s empty,” he adds. We go to the back together, and Caleb opens the flimsy door. It’s a long room, and the back wall is filled with cages. The cages are all broken and dirty, and it stinks. The doors are all open except for a few at the bottom. I try not to look at the piles of bones and red dust in the open cages as I head to the closed ones.
