That was more than enough. The End

For a brief moment, I could almost see the younger Suzanna smiling at me again, clean and bright like the rising sun. Then the loud cry of a newborn rang through the room, followed by tears and joyful laughter, and the fading image disappeared. I lowered my head and looked at my gentle wife and my beautiful son. Slowly, a relieved smile appeared on my face. At last, it was time for me to let go.

Then I commented underneath it. "Thanks for the concern, everyone. We've broken up. Please don't bother me about this."

I think about a table full of people. A bakery with a step. A window seat that became mine. I think about Eli on the porch with his hand raised. I think about "what do we do" like it was already shared. I think that after is not an ending. It is a beginning shaped like an ending and I have been building toward it since a wrong elevator floor and a wolf who bowed before I saw a face and I am almost there.

A thing with a location was a thing you could bear to wait for. He finished the book. He closed it. He sat with the quality of having finished something, which was not the same as the quality of having ended something. Finishing was completed. The ending was a loss. The therapy would be an ending, and he would hold it as an ending, with all the weight that endings deserved. But the after—the after was not an ending. The after was a different kind of thing.

Sleep came easily, especially surrounded by my guardians. No dreams came to me, just the dark. My mind was fully conscious while I slept. I felt something nudging at my mind trying to find a way in. Soon enough, they found their way in, and Lucifer's presence filled my mind, his consciousness tried to overpower my own. “Let me in Little Goddess,” his voice whispered in my head. “Never,” “Don't you miss me? Don't you miss the way I filled you?” I blocked the images of my rape. He was trying to push into my head. My powers took mine and Lucifer's consciousness to another realm. It was pitch black, I looked down at my hand, my essence glowed gold. I looked back up, there he was towering over me

It was over for me. .... Months and days had passed since the Long War had ended. I wandered the cities of the Empire, searching solace in drink, in women and in food. Money was plentiful. The war had made sure of that. My brothers had both made investments and I was their sole collector. So I did exactly that, investing and binging, enjoying life as I drowned the sorrows of my memories. Then I met him, he was a strange man. Boisterous, glutonnous and too lecherous for my hypocrisy to tolerate.
