Just as the first, pale grey light of dawn began to creep through the high arched windows of the kitchens, a sound entirely shattered the quiet peace of the estate.
It was not the sharp, frantic clanging of the warning bell that signalled an attack.
It was the massive, iron death knell in the highest tower of the keep. It tolled once – a deep, booming, mournful sound that violently vibrated through the very bedrock of the mountain.
Elara instantly shot to her feet, her chair scraping harshly against the stone floor. Her violet eyes widened, the breath completely leaving her lungs as the heavy bell tolled a second time.
