Nothing, no scent, no sound, no sign that anyone had entered. A shaky breath escaped my lips as I clutched my pounding head. I staggered to my feet, guided only by the pale moonlight spilling through the window. My body felt like lead, weak, empty, and starving, my throat burned with dryness. I stumbled into the kitchen and drank water. I set the cup down, and that’s when it happened. A sharp, agonizing crack split through my bones, my knees buckled. No. Not again. I screamed as the shift overtook me, my bones twisting, reshaping, skin tearing. The black wolf emerged, ruthless and wild, trapping my soul behind its eyes.

Ghost raised the pistol to them, their eyes wide with terror. “P-Please, we did our best, we’ve never failed you. You brought him too late,” the physician trembled. They knew the code; the reward of incompetence was death. It’s been like that for centuries, and Ghost won’t stop now. Ghost almost pulled the trigger when the beep pierced through the air like an arrow. The gasps were deafening, and the gun slipped from Ghost’s hand with a light clack. “Does the dead pay the living a visit, or am I dreaming?” a nurse shrieked in disbelief.

Nothing happened, though, and relief instantly filled me. Every other time as soon as ink had gotten onto the page, I would be transported into the book. However, this time nothing happened, which might be because I hadn’t used the quill since the ink just spilled. No longer frozen, I recalled the knock on the door and rose from my desk. I was about to take a step when suddenly my living room dissolved into inky blackness. An inky blackness that had only been in a couple of times when the three musketeers of assholes paused my story. Which means I was in my book, 1001 Dark Tales. I instantly started praying that for once those three weren’t in the books with me. In the next second, I realize

"I'm not finishing it your way." ​He didn't fire the gun. Instead, he lunged forward, grabbing the drive and tackling his father toward the open gallery door. They disappeared into the mist, the sound of a struggle lost to the roar of the ocean below. ​"XAVIER!" Scarlett screamed, sprinting toward the edge. ​Two Hours Later. ​The lighthouse was quiet. Arthur Blackwell was gone—vanished back into the fog he had emerged from, leaving nothing but a bloodstain on the stone and the encrypted drive lying on the gallery floor.

I said, silently requesting his help. He groaned. "This place is haunted by the ghost of a maid who committed suicide after her lover left her for another woman. She jumped into the well and died there a long time ago. The only skeleton you will find down there at the bottom of the well is the maid's body," he explained. And then— The shadow’s head moved close to her ear and whispered— “I have come…” Her eyes widened. The next second, the lamp went out. The room plunged into darkness. And someone grabbed her shoulder— Cold… icy… not human at all. Anusha screamed and fainted. When she woke up in the morning, the guest house was normal.

Those who had discovered the truth were swiftly silenced, their secrets dying with them. The rumors about The Ghost were the stuff of criminal legend. They said he could walk through walls, that he had spies in every major organization, that he could make people disappear without a trace. Some said he wasn't human at all, but a vengeful spirit who had returned from the dead to punish the wicked. Victor did nothing to discourage these tales—in fact, he cultivated them.

"Tell me exactly what transpired in that Blackwell safehouse before you crawled into his bed. Every detail." Bianca swallowed hard, her pulse jumping in her throat.
