One guard gasped, “We swear, Sovereign, there is no book with us. We are not thieves.”
They writhed beneath my power, faces twisted, their pleading curdling in my ears. When the sound sickened me, I flicked my hand and released them. They collapsed into a tangle, shuddering, eyes wide as if the world had turned to glass.
“You will neither eat nor sleep until my book is returned. Do you understand?” I said, my voice cold enough to frost.
They nodded with desperate, animal motions.
