Again and again, hope sparked and fizzled, wearing him down until he was almost numb. By the third morning, a woman appeared at the edge of the landfill.

Little by little, I learned how to truly love someone too. The year my first son was born, Suzanna died. I heard that a residential building near the military district caught fire, trapping more than forty children inside. Suzanna was the first person to rush in. She carried more than a dozen children out of the flames. The last time she went back inside, the fire intensified. She never came out. In a daze, I remembered something from many years earlier. Not long after our engagement, Suzanna had stood before her sister’s grave and spoken to me with complete seriousness.

I had finally changed my fate completely in this life. As I walked out of the bureau, sunlight poured over me. It was warm and gentle. Wynnie followed behind me numbly. Just as I was about to get into a taxi, she suddenly called out, “Miles, do we still have a chance to start over?” I did not even turn around. I only replied in a cold voice, “I’m not someone who stoops to that level, so don’t humiliate yourself in front of me. From now on, we’re strangers.”

Just sneakers and a light jacket. The city was unusually quiet. I ended up at a small antique bookstore tucked between a florist and a tailor. It had no flashy signage, just a brass bell on the door and a handwritten welcome note in cursive. Inside, the scent of old paper and cedar wrapped around me like a story waiting to be told. I let myself drift between the aisles until a book caught my eye—Letters Never Sent. It was a collection of real, unsent letters from women over the last century. To lost loves, estranged mothers, unborn children.

a soft tapping sound came from inside it. Tap. Tap. Tap. The pages turned by themselves. Not to the beginning. Not to the end. To a page that had been blank only moments before. Fresh words slowly appeared in silver ink. > Every ending is only a lantern waiting to become someone else's beginning. I looked at my friends. Then at the road stretching beyond the hill. I smiled. There was silence before I heard a muffled sob. I backed away quietly. Haley was Giselle’s best friend, and I barely knew her. It wasn’t my place to comfort her or to admit I had overheard her cellphone conversation. By the time I found the library, my heart had calmed. I went inside and quietly closed the door. There were many books of different genres, all arranged according to their genre and color. Shelves lined the walls, floor to ceiling. For a second, I forgot why I was there. I ran my fingers along the spines until I stopped at ‘It Ends With Us’. I had always wanted to read it.

His hands on the wheel looked almost relaxed. We ended up at this little neighborhood on the edge of the city I’d never been to before. Not the shiny downtown parts or the dangerous corners. Just normal streets with normal people. Kids riding bikes. An old lady walking her dog. Nico parked outside a small bookstore that looked like it had been there forever. The sign was faded, and books were stacked in the windows like they were trying to spill out onto the sidewalk. “Bookstore?” I asked, raising an eyebrow as we got out.

And Disastor is the weakest of its kind! “This is just the beginning,” he whisper as the sky open for him to jump from one place to another.
