Hunted
I called out, letting the warmth of the store chase the cold from my skin.
She looked up from her newspaper, her smile soft and welcoming as she raised her cup in greeting. I moved through the aisles, tossing a few essentials into my basket.
The sound of the door chime pulled my attention, and I glanced up out of habit. That’s when I saw him.
My heart stopped.
It was a face I hadn’t seen in years—a face I had prayed never to see again.
“The hunt yesterday was good,” someone said, their voice low.
I moved instinctively, pressing myself into the shadows of the shelves, my breath shallow.
