The phone buzzed again and another message came in. My wife gasped. "What?" I asked. She held the phone up closer to her face, and I saw as her fingers dragged the photo into zoom. She thrust the phone into my hand. "OH MY GOD! Isn't that?" She turned her head to look at the wall of our apartment, or more specifically, to the space beyond the wall. "Oh, fuck. . .I think it is." The man was immediately recognizable. He was a ruggedly attractive salt-and-pepper gent whom we'd seen plenty of times over the past year because, as it turned out, he was the neighbor who had moved in next door to us just twelve months prior.

"A good neighbor is a present help. If you let my son use this place as his playroom, wouldn't he be just like your grandson? "With the addition of a grandson, you'll have more support later in life. You old fool, how can you not understand this?" I raised the knife and swung it once through the air. "If you don't leave right now, believe me, I'll chop you to pieces." Shirley stepped backward again and again until she finally retreated outside. I slammed the door shut. Her shrill, annoying voice was finally cut off. I'd lived in this apartment for two years, and the neighbors next door changed as often as the seasons.

For my first on-line date, I call this a win so far. "Yeah, they keep me busy. I'm not sure how working moms do it, especially when they're single. It seems like it's never-ending work." "Who is watching them tonight?" "My next-door neighbor. He and I have become great friends since we moved in." "That's nice. Having someone you can count on live next door." "Yeah. It is. And my husband's captain lives a few doors down, so I'm kind of surrounded by people to take care of us in the event of an emergency."

Just as l was staring, Alecia all of the sudden hooked her arm into mine and tugged me past them and into the house next door. John wasn't lying when he said it was a small party. It was nothing like ours from last night. There were literally less than twenty people here and most of them stayed in their own little groups. "John", Alecia beamed but while pulling me to him. "Where can two sexy ladies get a drink from around here?", She leaned forward and gave him a peck on his lips but she didn't pull her lips away quickly.

I went to my window and opened the drapes and window for the very first time this month. I turned my gaze towards the skies, that I could clearly see the lovely stars, and then I began to pull my gaze towards the house next to another. When I realized that the other house had been sold, I turned and looked at it. They're supposed to be our new residents, as Mom mentioned earlier, based also on unopened parcels and cartons. I spotted a couple at the window and thought they were lovely and happy. The huge windows with a cradle stand just across from my room, indicating that the family has a baby.

I walked into the kitchen with my mother trailing behind me. "Glad you're finally getting to relate." My dad called from behind. I tried not to roll my eyes. If relating meant being locked up in a cupboard then I didn't want to. I entered my room and shut the curtains. The last thing I wanted to see was anything related to the house Nextdoor. As I collapsed on my bed, my eyes caught a simple lemon stick on notes plastered on my window. Curiously, I tiptoed to the window and peeled it off. Instinctively, I raised my eyes to the room opposite mine and saw someone looking at me with an amused expression on his face. It took me some minutes to recognize him.

“Please help me. He’ll kill me!” My feet move of their own volition, my fingers itching to catch her. Save her from him. But before I can make that mistake, he catches her around her waist, laughing and kissing her neck. His lips move as he whispers something to her that makes her go limp in his arms. He doesn’t even bother to try shielding her naked body from me as he says, “It’s a kink of hers.” His blue eyes drift to the fence. “You…you live next door?”

At the far end of the hall, their new neighbor’s door was cracked open—just enough to spill voice, laughter, and music into the hallway like an invitation and a warning at the same time. Her mother sighed. “Oh great. Party neighbors.” Ruby wasn’t listening. Her eyes had caught something—someone. A boy stepped out onto the balcony next door, the one directly connected by only a narrow wall to the balcony of their new apartment. The dying sunlight caught him perfectly: messy black hair, silver chain glinting, a confident, careless way he leaned over the railing. He laughed at something someone said behind him, but his eyes slid up for a split second—meeting Ruby’s.

Before the three could go inside, they heard a noise next door and a group of neighbors came out to see what was going on. "What happened?" Rose couldn't help but ask. Leona was also a little curious, if she wasn't pregnant she would have wanted to come see it. Daniel smiled without saying anything. Of course he knew what had happened. But he couldn't say it now. At that moment there was a sharp female voice from next door. "You get out, get out! This is my house! You can't take my house! Honey, come here and tell them that this house belongs to us! It doesn't belong to anyone else!"
