I sold that nightmare-filled house and used the remaining money to open a small bookstore, specializing in books on women's self-defense and legal aid. Cara quit her job to help me. The air grew thick, heavy with the scent of smoke and something darker, sulfur and sweet musk. A low chuckle echoed through the room.

Bryan grinned, his eyes gleaming with a sadistic thrill as he stepped forward, his movements slow and deliberate. The air in the room grew heavy, thick with the scent of fear. Mandy’s breath hitched, her body trembling uncontrollably as she shook her head, silently pleading with him to stay away. Desperation clawed at her as she shifted toward Dave, hoping for some form of protection, but he was quicker, springing up from the bed before she could reach him.

I rang Brenda’s doorbell, trying to push the worry aside. Brenda flung the door open, her hair forming a wild halo around her head. She clutched her tablet in one hand. "Finally!” She said, grabbing my wrist and pulling me inside. "Come talk some sense into these women.” And that was exactly what I spent the next hour doing. The book club women could only be described in one word: crazy! They were crazy in the head, crazy in the pockets and by all means, crazy in their entire lifestyles.

His kind of crazy is the kind that should be medicated. One other time, a con artist tried to sell me magic beans. Honestly, I didn't know what I would do with those. Become Viola the Giant Slayer? Not that I believed him though. Three pick-pockets, one mugger, five homeless people, two money-doublers and four drunks later, it seems as if I have seen it all. Until tonight, that is.
