he whispered gently, careful not to spook me. "What happened?" I asked curiously, glancing around the room. "You didn't press the buzzer, so you passed out from pain" he faced the ceiling, not staring at me. "They had you on the highest setting for normal people and you couldn't feel it so they turned it up" he almost sounded angry at me . "You can be angry but I didn't choose to be like this. I became numb" I uttered to him. "So you can be angry but I won't care".

Dwayne and I walked away without looking back. Behind us, Brandon collapsed, as if all the strength had been drained out of him. He lay sprawled on the ground like a dead body. His eyes were empty as he whispered hoarsely, "I'm sorry…" But it didn't matter anymore. Dwayne led me into the bathroom, carefully helping me out of my dress and gently washing away the dirt from my skin. I looked into his eyes and spoke softly. "I'm sorry. I made things difficult for you again."

The travel agency had a nifty feature: they equipped both tourists and guides with locators to keep everyone from getting separated. Chester barged in with a plate of food and plopped down next to me, gripping me tightly. He nuzzled into my neck, inhaling deeply. "I've missed you so much." He clung on, refusing to let go, and tried to spoon-feed me. "Here, let me." I slapped the spoon away. "What's the point? I don't feel anything for you anymore." The spoon, made of glass, shattered on the floor. Chester squeezed tighter, and I struggled to catch my breath.

For the first time in days, I felt a flicker of normalcy. After dinner, Kayden and I walked Stella and Damon to their home. On the way back, Kayden took my hand in his, his touch warm and grounding. “How are you feeling?” he asked, his voice gentle. “I’m fine,” I replied automatically. He stopped, turning me to face him. “I don’t mean that. How are you really, Heather?” I hesitated before whispering, “Numb. At the moment, I just... feel numb.” Kayden nodded, his gaze soft. “Time heals, Hea. It always does.”

"8 p.m. at the Grandview Hotel. Don’t be late." Just like that, she hung up. I exhaled slowly. Fine. One last meet before I disappeared forever.

Like it was never there. I didn’t know where she was taking me, didn’t know what was happening to me, but I didn’t care. I felt detached from my body, like I was floating through the world without any control over my actions. And it felt good, like I was high and rugs. Part of me wanted to scream, to fight back because this was simply too good to be true, but the rest of me was tired. So, so tired. As we continued walking, the numbness settled over me like a blanket, and I accepted it. I accepted that I wasn’t in control anymore, that I had given up. The pain was no longer there, and I wanted to cling to it for a while before I came back to reality. Whatever happened next, it didn’t matter.

I do not know that we will ever fully understand now that she is gone. I got out of the shower and dried off, drying my hair as well. I tossed on tights and a t-shirt. As I walk out of my closet, I see Colby in the sitting room, waiting for me to join him. Grabbing a couple bottles of water, I walk over to him handing a bottle to him. He puts it down pulling me into his lap. “How do you feel?” he asks me. “I honestly do not know. I feel numb, I guess. Shock that she is gone, yet relief that it is over,” I say to him quietly as I nuzzle into his neck.

SHUN COULDN’T wait for the day to end. His back hurts like hell, his shoulders slumped, and his feet are close to numb as he wiped the dirty table with a round rug. It’s almost 11 PM, and the last customer had just gotten out a few minutes ago. Now, he just had to wipe all the tables clean and lock up the resto before he can go home.
