" As if her thoughts had been exposed, Vivian denied it again and again. "Of course not. Why would I think about him?" Although she said that, she had grown used to Julian's efforts to help her recover her memory. Even when she repeatedly pushed him away and found him annoying. Even when she smashed the gifts he brought to please her and drove him out of the house. But during this time without Julian, Vivian felt uncomfortable in ways she could not explain. I purred, leaning in, letting my breath ghost over his jaw. Then the fire alarm screamed, shrill and deafening. The elevator lurched, plummeting downward, and Tommy's bravado shattered. He shrieked, a high-pitched wail, and crumpled to the floor, out cold. I didn't hesitate - my hands gripped the doors, claws itching beneath my skin as I pried them open with a grunt. I stepped over his limp body, the doors snapping shut behind me as the elevator rocketed back up.

I could feel as his comforting presence tried to soothe me inside while allowing me to get it out of my system. I wasn't sure how long we stayed like that, but soon I could feel myself begin to calm down inside once more; the numbness starting to freeze itself back over as the seconds ticked by.
