"P..please save... I followed her little finger to find an emerald green necklace resting on the floor. Whatever that meant i could guess the piece of jewelry was equally as important as she was so I steadied her on my thighs and picked it up. The building was slowly cracking down and the heat was becoming worse so I wrapped the blanket around the both of us and ran out of the building. The moment I stepped out with her into the safest zone the bricks of the building fell and crashed into dust. "Ms Elzandre" someone called in relief and I fell to the ground with the girl still in my arms while staring at her unconscious body with a feeling of satisfaction in my heart.

To hold onto this… for as long as I can. To live in it. To breathe in it. But no matter how tightly I hold onto that feeling— That thought still finds its way back in. Quiet. Persistent. It was a freight elevator designed to extract the victors. I turned my back on the camera. I waded through the water toward the descending lift. Behind me, Sloane pushed herself up. She clutched her bleeding hand to her chest and followed her queen out of the dark without a single word of protest.

“Then I was in a different place—dark, with stone. She was on the ground. Barely breathing. Someone screamed for help.” Jasper. It had to be him. He’d surfaced once already at a café; a barista from town had mentioned it to one of our runners, and it made its way back to my desk. I hadn’t had proof until now. “When?” I forced the word out. “Soon,” Nora whispered. “It feels close. Like if no one moves, she… won’t make it.” I didn’t remember crossing the room, just that my hand was on the front door, then on Nora’s shoulder, gentler. “You did the right thing coming here. Thank you.”

Red lights flashed across the room as the chamber’s floor began to lower slowly into darkness. Sloane’s voice returned, cold and amused. “You shouldn’t have come. Phase Two doesn’t end with you, Ava. It begins with your child.” Liam didn’t think. He fired at the control panel, sparks flying. The glass cracked but not enough. The chamber was descending fast. “Liam!” Ava screamed. He grabbed her hand, pulling her toward the corridor, even as the ground trembled beneath them. “We’ll come back for her,” he said through gritted teeth.

"Then let's tear the foundation out from under them." The wall of the tunnel gave way, and the roar of the mountain swallowed everything. They weren't hiding anymore; they were the storm. I used the power. I won. Helena stared at me. "How did you do that?" I smiled. "I'm stronger than you think." I raised my weapon. "It's over." She screamed. I fired. She fell.
