The heavy executioner’s axe caught the pale morning light, its iron edge gleaming cold, sharp, and relentless against the bruised-purple sky. A collective breath hitched across the plaza. Thousands of onlookers stood frozen, their eyes locked on the dark granite block. Lord Vane watched with a triumphant, sinister smirk spreading across his face as the heavy-armored executioner raised the double-headed blade high above his head, muscles straining under his leather pauldrons. Inquisitor Varek gripped the heavy iron leash tight, his knuckles white, expecting the silver-haired female to bow her neck in terror.

RONAN'S POV I waited until the crowd was gone before I moved. The firelight was dying, the torches sputtering and fading one by one, and the open space where the executions had taken place was empty now except for the dark stains on the ground and the men who were already hosing the blood away like it was nothing more than mud that needed washing off. I stood at the edge of the shadows and watched the house where she had disappeared, and I tried to remember when I had last seen her look at me the way she did before she ran—like I was the only thing in the world that still made sense.

She turned the page, her fingers tracing the edges of the paper. The next entry was dated, and the ink was a deep, vivid red. I let my eyes lose their focus and concentrate on the flame of a lamp at the edge of my view, instead. Fifteen men fall beneath the executioner’s cleaver. Fifteen bodies are stacked in a cart the thralls pull away, with fifteen heads stacked on top. Some members of the pack have gotten sick. Some have fainted. There are intermittent shouts and screams of grief. You have to do this, I remind myself. You can’t let them take this pack from you. You can’t let them hurt you, or Nathan, or your child. Never again. When the bodies have been cleared away and the scaffold mopped clean of blood, they bring out a long table and three sturdy chairs with manacles on the arms. “He is not a legend. He is the warning.” In the center of the hall, the Executioner walked among the levitating bodies. With each step, the pressure in the air increased. “You have broken the pact,” his voice sounded, cold and articulated like the snap of a chain. “You have violated the balance to feed sick ambitions.” He stopped. The weapon on his arm pulsed. “The judgment has been made.” The bodies burst. Not in fire, not in sound. In silence. Blood ran down the walls like ink. Flesh dissolved like burned paper.

“ Do you know who I am, little wolf?” Victoria Stephens gulped. She had to fucking sensually gulped at my question. Her little nodding made me growl. “ Use your words,” I growl making her quiver. Her fear and helplessness right now make her more attractive in my eyes. The sight of her trembling always makes me want to own her. She met my eyes and gulped. “ Y-You’re the…executioner,” she mentioned and shut her eyes as if who I am burns her. I nodded and smirked, satisfied at her fears. “I do not just kill, Victoria. I execute the most painful death,” I whispered and push her again before storming out of the room.
