***** EIGHT YEARS AGO: THE FARM The grass is green and gold with the heat of summer. A warm breeze ripples through the standing hay in great waves that flow and shimmer to the far distance, seemingly to the edge of the world. The sky above is a dome in blue opal which deepens almost to cobalt at the horizon. And the horse is a silver-grey poem, running freely, tail and mane streaming as she moves.

The young women wave at us, their hands busy as they pour jam into jars and stir large pots. I marvel at the efficiency of their operation, how seamlessly everything seems to work here. The stainless-steel counters gleam, and the whole place smells incredible—a mix of sweet fruit, fresh cream, and herbs. We step back outside, the sun warming my face as we continue walking. The farm is full of life, with fields stretching out in every direction, animals grazing peacefully, and windmills turning lazily in the distance. There’s a small creek running through one section, and kids’ laughter drifts over from where they’re playing.
