The First Shot Novels & Stories

My heart hammered as I tried to move, tried to scream, but nothing came out. Then I heard the first gun shot and nearly threw up. One shot. Two shots. Three shots. Darkness.

I begin to scream for help at the top of my lungs, something I should have done earlier. The first shot hits me in my shoulder, and I let out another loud scream, this one a scream of pain and terror. I hope fervently that she intends to just maim me, but I’m wrong. The second one hits me smack in my chest, making me topple backward. I only hear the third shot faintly, because even before she fires the gun for the third time, I’m already slipping into darkness from which I know I'll never return.

I shot. There was complete silence after that shut; I couldn't see their faces, but I could read the shock off them as they watched the man slump to his death. I couldn't believe I had gotten him in the heart. They came all at once next, so I shot wildly; the first shot hit one of them on the arm, the other on the chest—not quite the heart considering he didn't die; the next two shots missed; before I could shoot again, they had covered the distance.

Russell begged. I wasn’t sure what gun I grabbed but with two hands, I pointed it at Russell and fired. The first shot missed him completely. By this time, tears were running down my face as I squeezed the trigger again. This time I hit his leg. Russell cried out in pain as I pulled the trigger again. That one nicked his side.

The first two matches had one person shooting first each, so for the third match, shooting together was reasonable! Esther readily agreed. “Sure!” Aria seemed completely caught off guard and stood stunned for a moment before raising her gun. “Okay, together then—let’s go!” As soon as she said that, Aria shot first, taking advantage of Esther as she was still cocking her pistol— “Bang…” “Bang!”

Mark said as he shot at the man and we also opened fire at him. We stopped shooting as we stared at the body of the man in front of us. His head has already been shattered by our bullets. Everyone was breathing hard as it was unexpected. First day and it was like this.

Turning around barely blinking, my shot gun was in midair and I pressed the trigger. “Shit” The gun wasn’t fucking loaded? THE GUN wasn’t loaded? I barely had time to process the information when my mystery person fired his gun. Warm liquid spattered across my face as I groaned a loud, “Fuck”

Savannah The first shot rang out before I even realized what was happening. One second, Luke had Pete backed into a corner, ready to squeeze the truth out of him. Next, the warehouse was exploding with gunfire. Some bullets tore through crates, and the sparks flashed off the metal beams, the air filled with shouting and boots pounding against concrete. “This was a setup,” I whispered, my voice lost in the chaos.

For now. Anaïs lit the small lantern she’d brought, setting it near the girl’s feet. “Are we gonna be okay?” the girl asked. Anaïs crouched beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulder. “Yes,” she said. “Because we’re not alone. And we’re not helpless.” Outside, a bird called sharply—then stopped. The first shot came just after noon. A single crack in the silence. Then another. And another. Like a chain snapping link by link.

The first man never got his shot off. Varek moved before the blink finished. Sideways off the line of fire, his gun making two quiet sounds... nothing like the shots in the basement... and the two men at the front of the group went down like their strings had been cut. The other four opened up.
