Now, go before you're late,” Ace stressed, handing me my coat, then my computer bag and purse. “Make sure you leave yourself enough time to pump before and after your meeting.”

I had learned, over the past two years, not to skim. I read every page myself. All forty-seven pages of the main body, and the eleven-page subsidiary agreement attached to it. I sat at my desk with a pen and a notepad and went through it the way Isabella had taught me to, slowly, with every assumption turned off. I found it on page nine of the subsidiary agreement. I ground them in an iron bowl until the paste gleamed with a sheen I liked, drew runes with blood taken from a hen—oldstocked ritual—and felt the heat of potential at my fingertips. Power is agreement. Make the world agree with you. My grandmother’s voice rose in memory...precise, cruel, kind. So I wrote the agreement and bound it with a circlet of flame that did not burn the body but gnawed at the threads that tied truth to flesh. It would not kill him, killing has witnesses and funerals. It would not merely wound, wounds invite pity. It would erase the thing he had become, the idea, the bond, the dangerous possibility.

I can't answer that now, I just don't know what to expect anymore. "Here," Abel announces and comes over the couch that I am sitting with a book in his hands. He hands me the book and opens it to a page. I take a moment to read what it is that he is pointing to and can immediately feel his magnetic pull on me as he sits beside me. It was a compilation of stories, experiences, and practical advice on mental wellness, created by individuals from their community center.

She discovered that surrendering was not a sign of weakness but rather an act of courage, resilience, and deep wisdom. It encouraged them to explore the areas in which they might be resisting, clinging, or trying to control outcomes. Rita's story became a catalyst for readers to embrace the dance of surrender, to trust in the divine unfolding of their own journeys, and to find solace and peace in relinquishing control.
