The words came out a little too fast and I realised I was smiling, my chin lifting a bit as pride sneaked in before I could stop it. Elena paused and looked at me over her shoulder, one brow lifting. “Are you bragging right now?” I made a small laugh. “Maybe a little.” She chuckled too, shaking her head as she opened the fridge, the light spilling out and revealing the neatly arranged shelves. Everything inside was organised and carefully stocked. There were bowls of cut fruits, small containers with labels, bottles of juice and milk lined up like soldiers, and what looked like prepared meals sealed and untouched. She reached in and took out a small bowl of fruit, setting it on the counter.

The kind that isn't funny at all, that comes out because nothing else fits. Forty thousand survivors within visible distance. Probably more scattered beyond. Three hundred million across the planet in bodies that had six months at the outside. She and Thorne found fruit. Wild, overgrown, slightly wrong-shaped from two hundred years of growing without anyone selecting for anything. She bit into one and her eyes went wet immediately. Not because of the taste. Because of the realness of the taste. The way physical sweetness was specific and messy and a little overripe and absolutely nothing like knowing conceptually what sweetness was.

The evolved fruit also did things more than just fill the eaters. The other portions of food on their plates were equally nutritious. The meat of the evolved creatures was very efficient due to how their bodies work. Halfway through his plate, David looks at Elizabeth. Elizabeth looks up. “Yeah? Something on my face?” ~No, nothing. It wasn’t voted on and had just happened. It was better it was her than Margaret. Margaret always had problems with her hormones. “You speak like it was an actually bed” Evelyn said digging her teeth into the fruit. It tasted juicy she didn’t know what fruit it was and only plucked it because Scott said it was edible. It looked like a cross hatch between mangoes and pears anyway. She’d have definitely loved to have them planted on their farm. “What do you mean if it was actually a bed? That king sized softie isn’t a bed?” Lydia frowned.

However, Adrian didn’t enter immediately; he continued to observe with his divine consciousness, unsure of the situation below. “I didn’t expect this little fellow to have reached such a stage!” Adrian marveled at the power and wonder of nature. Even a simple fruit could evolve into a spirit. Fortunately, he hadn’t startled it. “Hmph, luck is on my side!” Adrian glanced at the scattered Soulnascent Fruits on the ground, sensing a significant harvest. It wasn’t just the Soulnascent Fruits becoming spirits; it might be the Soulnascent Tree itself! Otherwise, why would the fruits be scattered all over here?
