It came from them all, every adult and child, like a high pitched frequency that resonated in the depths of Sally’s own soul. The Gate had opened. Matthew McCavendish’s greatest fear had come to pass. The Gate had opened between this world and the worlds beyond, the worlds he had written of in his journal. The Gate was supposed to free the souls that passed through it from the prison of Creation. That’s what Matthew had written in his journal. But the Gate wasn’t opening in the worlds beyond, it was opening in this one, and the souls that passed through it had to run a very deadly gauntlet first.

She is slowly becoming the mother I never had. I finished early with Lady Viviane, and I want to enjoy an evening stroll before I reach home. My stroll takes me by the main gate of the palace. The handwriting is old, the ink nearly brown from age. "Eastern gatehouse schedule to remain irregular, low-priority patrol." I freeze, reading it again. “Low priority,” I murmur. “They haven’t changed this in decades.” Trish leans closer. “Meaning?” "Meaning that the gatehouse is weak. It's barely guarded, probably still manned by undertrained recruits or lazy watchers. If we confirm it's the same, that could be a way in or out without raising suspicion." It even had what appeared to be rabbit ears protruding from the roof. This place was a gateway to wonderland for some and a nightmare for others.

The guards were stationed in their usual positions, standing alert, yet there was an unspoken tension in the air that seemed to ripple out from me. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was coming, something that had been building for days now, like a storm on the horizon. Gus had just handed me the car keys, a small, insignificant thing that he passed with a nod as we discussed the need for more patrols. But the conversation felt hollow, like I was reaching for something that had slipped through my fingers.
