There was something about her expression—peaceful, lost in thought—that drew me in. I smiled softly, running my hand over the cover again. It was silly, but just holding the book made me feel a little lighter, like I’d found a small piece of beauty on an otherwise ordinary day. I probably looked ridiculous sitting there, staring at it like it was some kind of treasure.

The red cover book that I saw in my vision was on the shelf. Reaching for the book my eyes fell on a picture beside that book . It was a picture of a young girl standing in a garden. The garden was similar to the pack house backward but was a little different. The girl was standing before a house along with an eight year old Zander. From his deep brown hair and golden eyes I could tell the boy was Zander. But where is this house? Between the pack house and Zander's I never saw this house.

When it was my time, I pulled out the flat, red-wrapped gift and extended it to her. “Thank you, darling,” gratifying, she began ripping the decorating paper slowly. All the eyes around watched curiously, holding their breath. They were definitely going to be satisfied I could say. I had been thinking over this present for the last two months. As the last casing was undone, and the velvety covered book was out, frowns formed in every forehead. Eyeing the flock, Lauren proceeded to turn the cover. Three, two, one!

Daniel takes a book off the shelf, and I turn to face him. "What do you like to read the most?" he ask. "A bit of everything, I enjoy gaining knowledge," I shrug. "Take this; consider it a memento from me," he says, holding the book out to me. I raise an eyebrow. I take the book from his hand and look at the cover, which depicts a couple embracing. I check the title, which reads: "Farewell to Humanity." "Thank you." "You're welcome." I say nothing more and head toward the path I memorized leading to the bedroom. I lie down on the bed and stroke the book's cover. I start reading and don't know how much time passes, but when I come to, the day has already dawned.

Sounds good. Wish I could join you.... Then I get a quick shot of the cover. What on earth's she reading? Tipping back her book to see the jacket, it's a bright splash of cartoon figures against a gentian blue sky. Smiley faced men and women frolic with a dog in front of a kids' classic 'first house drawing': a square box, with a triangle of a roof and a window in each corner. I peer at the blurb on the back.... "A few weeks ago, it was finite element analysis and Fourier series. Now you're reading chick-lit?"

She was sitting under the Christmas tree alone and unwrapping her gifts. That small but heavy package was from her father. He was an old man in his 70s, and he always sent Lennie a book which was about how to become a broadminded person kind of crap. This year’s gift was Crime and Punishment. Lennie just took a look at the cover and then quickly threw it away.

"The cover is exactly right. The cream color. The specific typography Patricia chose for the title." "What does it look like?" I said. "Like the inside view of something that cost a great deal and produced something real," she said. "The cover is the green dress. Not literally. The color is the color of the green dress. The specific emerald that you wore to Marlowe's and to the gala and that you gave to the Brooklyn shelter." She paused. "The woman who collects it from that shelter is going to walk into her custody hearing in a dress that is the same color as the cover of a book about what the other side looks like."

Just more proof that Noah was a rich kid through and through. I snorted, reaching for the last book on the bottom shelf. It was placed weirdly from sight and it seemed to be wrapped with brown paper. Curiosity got the better of me and I ripped the paper away, wanting to see what book it was. Probably some first-edition Charles Dickens. But when I turned it over to look at the cover, my eyes widened. Two shirtless hunks tangled up together stared back at me from the cover. It could have as well been a cover for gay p**n.

The small paper bag was still in my hand. I had almost forgotten about it. I pulled the book out. KING. I stared at the cover for a moment. The image on it was simple. A crown. A dark background. The title printed across the center. I ran my thumb lightly over the cover. The painting from the gallery came back to me. I smiled. I placed the book on my bedside table. Then I remembered. The necklace. I took it out of my bag. For a moment, I simply turned it over in my hands.
