CHAPTER 1 — THE LATE RETURN I really shouldn’t have been there after closing time. The sign on the door already read “Closed” in elegant gold letters, and the lights inside Marcus Vale’s bookstore were dimmed to that soft amber glow he always left on for the night. I stood outside for a full minute, debating whether to just slip the book through the mail slot and run. But the book was rare — a 1923 first edition of The Great Gatsby with handwritten notes in the margins, and I couldn’t risk damaging it.

The books on the shelf were neatly arranged but the frayed edges and the little tears on the bottom of most of the books gave out that they’d been read a couple times. Adrian didn't particularly strike me as someone who would love to read but I guess you can't always judge a person by their outward appearance. I traced my fingers along the spines, the titles ranging widely from classic literature, to mindset guides then to business strategy books. The key fonts were crisp, the glow promising pages I’d only dared to dream of. The largest box held rare first editions of The Great Gatsby, Lolita, 1984—books I’d read in borrowed copies, from uninspiring editions or library dogs and mildew. Now they lay before me, pristine: rich mahogany leather, gold leafing on the spines. My breath caught in my chest; owning even one would’ve been impossible. Now I had three. I traced Gatsby’s title with trembling fingers, it felt like a betrayal or a blessing. Last came the envelope, heavy, thick lines beneath my name. I opened it, life slowing. Ink flowed in clear handwriting:

It was kind of an experiment with the male lead, and I ended up really liking him (like most of you do) In the end, if you pretty readers have some gems to spare, do consider giving them to this book. I really love those gems and the reviews. As I have said many times before, the reviews get a book recognized. My mother passed it on to me once realized that I love reading. To be fair I did watch the movie once I was a bit older. They included most of the famous line from the book, but there were a few things that I didn't like about the movie. I mean The great gatsby was written in a different time. but they included modern music in the movie. I wished that they would have used music from the time the book was written in. Everything else in the movie was just over the top for me.

His voice was low and husky, sending shivers down Vivian's spine as he spoke to her. “Pardon,” Vivian was totally confused by what he just said. “Tales of the Great Gatsby, it's a quote from the novel. You have read the book, right?” Eric Damian said, waving the book he had in his hand in the air. The book had the title “Tales of the Great Gatsby." “Oh...I haven't really read it to the end. I just got the book today. It's quite interesting,” Vivian said, somehow forgetting she had no idea how he got into her room despite the doors and windows being locked shut.

Who would have guessed he reads. My curiosity gets the better of me and matches it. The first book I spot one hundred years of solitude. I haven't read it so I decide to move to the next, The Great Gatsby. Am familiar with it so I pick it off the shelf and sit on his bed. The book is dusty like it hasn't been read in a while. Am so absorbed in it until someone snatches it away from me. "Get out!" I look up. Quinn is staring at me super mad.

"Thanks. Got a book in mind?" "Yeah, 'The Great Gatsby' by F. Scott Fitzgerald," I say, and she points me to where it might be. "Just one left should be along that wall. Good luck." With that, she heads back to her desk. After about 10-15 minutes of searching, I finally spotted it on the fifth shelf. As I reach for the book on the fifth shelf, I find myself stretching on my tiptoes, struggling to grab it. But then, I start to tip backward, almost taking a tumble.
