I was ready. I had spent months training for this moment and I was ready. The annual Grand Hunt had finally come for this year. Until now, I couldn’t be a part of the festivities because I was too young. The age for eligibility to participate was 24. This year, it was finally my year. I’d been training since before I even qualified. I would do it; I would win. For my family. I had to. I would restore my family name if it was the last thing I’d do.

“The Council is concerned. Unauthorized interference during a sanctioned Hunt is a problem. Unregistered chemicals. Four prey removed from the forest under your authority.” “Prey?” I repeated. Scott looked at me. “You know what the Hunt is.” “No,” I answered quickly. “I know what I was *told* it was.” I stepped closer to the table. “People were dragged into that forest.” “That's how the Hunt works,” Scott replied. “Not like that.” “You weren't there,” he snapped. “Neither were you.” Silence fell over the room. I turned to Darren. “You’ve seen this compound before? Where?”

Instead of the standard twelve like the rest of the men in his party, it held 15, two from the archer who had shot the beast earlier, as well as the arrow aimed to warn him.

In the right hands, they'd triple in value within a year. I closed my phone. A text from the lawyer: two more weeks. Everything was moving. The morning of the Hunting, I dressed in dark jeans and a plain black jacket. Practical. Warm. Nothing that would draw attention. The entire Pack streamed toward the hunting grounds — a vast stretch of old-growth forest that bordered Harrison's territory. Banners lined the path. The smell of roasting game and woodsmoke drifted from the preparation tents. Pups chased each other between the stalls while their parents shouted after them.

December 12. Sarah Miller. Age 29. Burned. January 4. "What is this?" I whispered. "The body count," Caleb said from behind me. He was standing close. I could feel the heat coming off him. It would be another night of smelling like a mangy wolf when all I wanted to do was chill. “You are going to like this. They are twin wolves. With the power vested in them, they swore to capture and wipe all the devious beasts out of their so-called lands. More or less, this chaos is nothing but the WILL of the King, but one thing is for sure, Unity is no more. “Scouts,” she coldly uttered, taking her troops’ attention, “Dispatch.” In not less than a minute, not a single being was standing on that spot. They glide swiftly and quietly into the woods, searching for any sign of unwanted existence. There, roars and rumblings shook the forest, as neon orbs of blue light fly up to the starry sky. Up back to the sky where they are bound to live, and they are now home.
