I deliberately lowered my voice, giving it a grave sincerity that would make my story sound all the more convincing to her. Fear poured across her face like a shadow cast by something unseen. Her eyes widened at my words, the terror in them so raw that, for a fleeting moment, she looked as though she had glimpsed something lurking beyond the veil of the ordinary. She shrank closer to me, pressing herself against my side as her fingers tightened around my arm. Her grip was almost desperate as though I were the last fragile thread tethering her to safety, the only shelter between her and whatever nightmare had begun to take shape in her mind.
