Hunter gazes out the window as the remains of Grant Manor cool, steam rising from the mostly fallen and scorched structure as the fire department works to put out the remaining flames. There's no way we can return there. Where does he mean when he says "home" ? Grant Manor was finally starting to feel like home with Livy and Hunter, my family right before everything changed and I learned the dark truth about who he is at night. Would the first home I found since leaving my marriage still be a smoldering ruin if I hadn't followed my ex-husband down to the party below? Would we all be better off pretending nothing was different about our little family?

Whatever Homer's reason isn't important to me as long as my family will not rot in jail or go to hell. Visiting Jonatahan's place was to check that woman and my hunch was just right. She was there lying like she owned the place but that will never happen. Jonathan's place is already disgusting and marked with negativity. I bought a new place and fully furnished it for them to start a new life together. I haven't given them the key yet when Homer gave them the key to their new home and car. I can't beat him when it comes to this. He even gave them a business under their name! Homer is already generous to my family. Jonathan needs to give back not to disappoint him. One word can ruin us!

No matter what, since heaven had given me a second chance at life, I absolutely could not allow the tragedy of my previous life to repeat itself. I returned to the bedroom and began ordering small home surveillance cameras online. In my previous life, when Megan first came to work in our home as a housekeeper, I had wanted to install cameras, but Daniel felt it would be disrespectful to someone living under our roof. Thinking back on it now, it was precisely because of our kindness that we had walked step by step into her trap.

Three years after my release from prison, I ran into my ex-wife in the presidential suite of the most exclusive hotel in Bayshore. It had been years since I last saw her. She was draped in a silk robe, radiating wealth. When she recognized me, something unreadable passed through Cecily Monroe's eyes. "On the day you got out, why didn't you wait for me to come pick you up?" I said nothing and handed over the takeout. Her gaze dropped to the scar on my wrist, and her breath caught. "I went too far with that. But you've always been tougher than Adrian. You can always get back on your feet." She was talking about what happened six years ago, when Adrian Burke was involved in a catastrophic

My sister, Nancy Wood, wanted to be the family's only child, so my mother had my name changed and handed my identification documents over to my grandmother. She even told me I had to pay for everything if I wanted to live under their roof. The change and coupons Nancy got from her shopping were the sole source of allowance I'd get. If she saved 30 dollars from her shopping trips, I would get 30 dollars next month. It was the last day for all students to enter their applications for college. I begged my sister to let me use her computer. She extended her hand. "You have to pay me 20 bucks." I fished all the money out of my pocket. I only had 19 dollars. So, I hastily blurted in a panic, "I

The man who'd once schemed to kill me for money had been reduced to begging for cigarettes and a decent meal. I smiled and pulled a piece of paper from my bag. It was a copy of the blueprint I'd designed for our dream home all those years ago. The beginning of my nightmare in my past life. "No money. But I can give you this." I took out a lighter and set the blueprint on fire right in front of him, then let it fall to the floor as it burned to ash. Gabriel seemed like he wanted to say something, but he couldn't catch his breath. The heart monitor began to shriek.

The horse slowly continued down the road, sensing that something isn`t right. When they reached the hill, the merchant knew exactly what it was. The remains of camp or a battle, he wasn`t sure…nor did he wanted to know. He turned, mounted his horse and went into the other direction. The Long Road, they call it. It certainly earned that name. Somewhere high above him, on rocky edge, hidden among two sides of the mountain stood an inn, old and freshly repaired, but still it was an inn. He hurried his horse. The inn was large, it had three of four floors, he couldn’t tell. It was getting larger and larger with each passing feet. He dismounted. Two large, but rundown, wooden doors loomed over hi

A few late commuters hurried past, but no one paid attention to a little girl pulling a suitcase by herself. The streetlights stretched my shadow and the suitcase's shadow long across the pavement. The truth was, I no longer remembered exactly where the children's home was. I only had a blurry sense that it was somewhere west, so I kept walking that way. By the fourth intersection, my arm ached so badly I could barely lift it. The crosswalk was wide. Halfway across, the suitcase wheel caught in a dip in the road. I pulled, but it would not move. So I crouched down and tried to lift it free.

I glanced sideways and saw Isabella desperately trying to hide her face behind my shoulder, yet her hand clung to mine with a strength that surprised me. Amid the deafening cheers, I looked at my family in the front row. Their faces were almost ashen. In that moment, I felt no vindication or even hatred. Because at last, in this reckoning 20 years overdue, I'd taken that scarred little girl by the hand and led her home. I finally understood that home wasn't where one was born, but where the love was.
