Eve took a step back, her heart and feet heavy as she managed to walk up the grand stairs. She felt cheapened again, loathing her family and Alessandro and every other person involved in her misery. That night, as she lay in bed shivering from an internal cold which had washed her body with goosebumps, the housekeeper returned all her property to her room. The message from Alessandro was clear. Their sham of an arrangement was over. Eve cried deep into the night, despising Ava for being so evil and then getting her into this, hating her parents who had sold her off and run away after manipulating her.

Eve's mother's illness was frequently on her thoughts, but she ignored it for the time being. With a nod, Eve took her arm and led her down the veranda stairs and along the road that led to the cluster of buildings that housed the majority of the pack members, as well as the administration buildings, the daycare center, and the community supplies.
