“I’m here because I want to prove that I’m the best. And the best is on this team.” His answer caught me off guard. He sounded so driven, so sure of himself. “I have no choice but to be the best,” he said. “I might be the heir to the throne, but until I’m sitting on it—and even then—I can’t slack. I have a kingdom to take care of, and in order to do that, I have to be at my best.” Hearing him speak like that almost made him appear in a whole new light. He wasn’t just there because he wanted to show off or intimidate others, he was on the team because he had an actual purpose. A responsibility.

Damn, it’s bad. “I’ve crossed everything off my list and the buses are ready,” Bobby adds with his usual bright smile. “Good job,” I tell him with more assurance than I feel. Bobby is one of the gentlest souls I know. He may look like a teenager but he’s actually pushing thirty. His mental capacity is that of a young teenager. He’s the heart of this team because in his eyes the players can do no wrong. I’d also put him up against any equipment manager in the league. "Those qualities are harder to find than technical skills."

The team all cheer in agreement, signifying their unity. "I'm already proud of you all. Every one of you has worked so hard to get here." I praise the team, looking at each player to know that this was a joint effort. "If you don't win tonight, it's not the end of the world. I won't be disappointed as long as I know that you played your best." I've never been one to put pressure on the team; they're in high school and have enough to deal with already. This game is meant to be fun, not a chore.
