Ian’s lips curled into something almost triumphant. “Finally,” he whispered. --- The labyrinth was no metaphor. It sprawled across the underbelly of the city, in the skeletal remains of a half-finished subway system abandoned decades ago. Concrete corridors stretched in half-complete arcs, some sealed, others collapsing into rubble, all stitched together by Ian’s fevered planning. He had mapped every dead end, every echo, every line of sight. He planted mirrors to fracture visibility, hung sheets of black fabric to bend perspective, scattered broken glass across the floor to catch faint glimmers of light.

I stepped closer, my voice quiet and cruel. “And now that you want it, I’m supposed to say yes immediately?” He tried to explain, but I lifted my hand. “Forget it.” I met his eyes. “Since you love your game so much, let’s play one more.” “…Game?” “Yes.” “Bring twelve slips of paper.
