The nursery was no longer a sanctuary of soft wool and carved wooden toys. It had become a pressurized chamber of shadow and light. As Killian and I burst through the door, the black water seeping from the vents was already pooling on the rug, obsidian liquid that moved with a predatory intent toward the three small beds in the center of the room. “I need to go. Make sure one of you is with her for the whole time.” When I took the lift to the dungeon, one of the war team was already waiting for me in the hall of the dungeon. The dungeon was actually just our term for a three-level basement that Zephyr had built to maximise the use of the hideout. The north dungeon is right below the dorm. It’s for the lab and also the clinic.

Inside, the room was beautiful. Warm light poured through tall windows overlooking the sanctuary grounds. The bed was vast and layered in pale fabrics softer than clouds. Water moved through channels carved into the floor, filling the air with the sound of gentle rivers. Flowers bloomed from living walls, their scent changing with the time of day. Shelves already held books, blankets, carved toys, and tiny clothes in colors I had never requested. The nursery beside it was somehow even more dangerous to my composure. Two cribs. Two rocking chairs.

The scent of sterilized air and baby lotion hung in the corridors, creating an ambiance of care and warmth. Reaching the nursery, a nurse guided me to where little Damian lay. The room was bathed in a soft, muted light, creating a cocoon of serenity around the sleeping infants. Every maid working at the nursery bowed at us respectfully as we entered the large chamber decorated with pink tapestries and many paintings suitable for a toddler. At one side of the room was a queen-sized soft bed covered in expensive silk. There was a small table and a loveseat on the rugged floor.

I stormed down the hall to the secondary stairs and went down to the dungeon. There were no bars on the windows. No dank or exposed cement or cinder block walls. The dungeon was actually quite opulent. A sensory explosion of textures, sights, smells, and sounds. My mouth ticked up at the corner. And most definitely tastes. I could hear Synra in the connected bathroom. So I took some time and got the scene set up. She knew not to come out here until I knocked on the bathroom door. The lights were automatically set to a lower level than most normal living spaces, but I lowered them a touch more. I was feeling a might predatory tonight. I needed to chase. To hunt. To attack. To claim.
