Excerpt from the Quizzing Glass Gazette, December 18, 1822, the Lady Society column: Never fret, my dears, Lady Society has returned. Lord Lonsdale has finally gotten leg-shackled, it is true, but there are many other rogues in the world with hearts that need taming. Too many for me to deal with on my own. Remember, ladies, it is up to you to do your part. Perhaps your rogue is still out there somewhere, waiting to be discovered. END OF BOOK EIGHT

“Thank you for coming to this meeting on short notice.” “I didn’t have a choice, did I?” I folded my arms, my eyes flickering from one face to the next. “What’s so urgent that you all called for me?” Varn cleared his throat, then stood. “We’ve finalized your engagement.” The room fell silent, “My What?” He smiled, fucking bastard. “Your engagement has been fixed to marry Lady Avalyne of the Obsidian Claw. The contract was sealed this morning.” I took one step forward, nothing funny about the tone of my voice. “And who the hell told you to do this without my permission?”

The lady was blinking at his gesture before she was laughing out loud. Laughing at his effort to woo her she was shaking her head after that laughter. Tom blinked his eyes as she was staring at him with her blue orbs. “But I don’t think I would be allowed to do so, my lord. You see, we have social rules and they state that a Lady should not engage a Lord when they do not each other. You don’t know my full name as I did not know yours. Hence I must decline,” she said as she stood up from the chair, ready to get away.

Then a group of lady workers moved forward. “Hey Miss Cassey. You should never dare to seduce the Tradiskano. The Tradiskano is a very noble man and he deserves the best woman in this continent. How dare you, a former detainee, make her way to the Tradiskano’s office as soon as you set foot in this shop?” “You are mistaken, Madame. I am getting engaged. I am not interested in the Sir Tradiskano.” “Then that’s good, Maharlikan. You should get your report ready now.”

With her wedding approaching, she became the center of attention. Whenever people spoke about me now, they simply shook their heads. “Lady Leanora… What a waste of her title as the Royal City’s finest noble lady.” “Exactly. She’s beautiful, elegant, educated, and skilled in music, chess, calligraphy, and painting. However, with a sister like that beside her, what can she offer?” One day, Rosalind cornered me in the study and pressed her hand down on my brush.

Chapter 60: shadow Elena POV The days following the rogue attack blurred together in a haze of exhaustion and despair. The engagement ceremony had been postponed, but everyone knew it was only a matter of time before it was rescheduled. The interruption was just that, an interruption, not a cancellation. I should have felt relief at the delay. Instead, I just felt numb. The servants' gossip continued unabated. If anything, the attack had given them new material. "Did you see how Lady Catherine fled?" Bertha said loudly in the kitchens, making sure I could hear. "Not very queenly behavior, was it?"

I wish I had that kind of time to waste. But I swear when I saw Lady Eodelle, I thought she was already the one I have been waiting for. I tried to find that piece in her. I was so mesmerized by her beauty and her story of life really compelled me. She is a strong, beautiful woman who beat the odds and never gave up even in the face of death, not once but so many times. And that’s why I promised I would never leave her in her fight here in Headow Stronghold.

Just as I was about to thrust into her, someone suddenly appeared behind me. I'd forgotten that I was still on the street. If I wanted to play around, I should've gotten a room. There were people coming and going on the street—what if we got caught? Thinking of this, I got up and helped the beautiful woman put her clothes back on. She struggled to her feet and dusted herself off. At that moment, the person behind us walked closer. He came up to us and asked, "Crystal Conley, why aren't you back yet at this hour?"

Automatically, she looked at Philip and Elizabeth, praying she'd be able to fulfill her promise and never return to England…set things right for her cousin again. But with temptations like the Duke of Anfield around, that would be slightly difficult. She wasn't falling! She could never fall! It sounded more of something she tried convincing herself of. While lost in her reverie, a thunderous applause broke round the entire hall, making her realise the engagement was over. Good! Now it was time to leave the hall, just anywhere away this overly beautiful man. The night was still young; and if she spent it all with him, she wasn't sure she was going to be leaving.
