I need the distraction so I clear my throat and begin. “The buh… bee… beast sttt aa… ree… The beast stared into the eyes of his Goddess and cloooo … seeee duhh… closed his eyes … for the … last time,” I say, then blink rapidly. I look up at all the males staring as my lip quivers on its own. “But… wasn’t he the last one? So if they all died who wrote the book,” I ask, since it seems like the obvious question. I flip to the front where I know the name is usually found, but there’s nothing.

She finishes the fourth book in March. Not March of the sixty-sixth year — March of the sixty-seventh. Two years and one month from the first entry. One hundred and four entries, shaped into four movements, the final movement written in the last six weeks, with the quality of something that has been building for a very long time and is now simply arriving. The book is called The First Life: What the Practice Earned and What the Practice Cost.

“That was smart.” “It’s just the beginning,” I replied. That was only the first crack. Very soon, the entire structure would collapse. Caleb suddenly straightened. “Oh right,” he muttered before reaching inside his coat. My eyes followed his movement curiously until he pulled out an old book wrapped carefully in dark cloth. Immediately, my heartbeat quickened because I recognized the book without even trying. “The Book of Life,” I whispered. Caleb nodded slowly. Josephine’s eyes widened in shock. “You actually brought it here?”

I took the piece of paper from him and nodded, "Yes, sir." Ezekiel dismissed us, and we left his office, relieved that it was over. Later in the afternoon, Aiden, Penelope, and I sat down together at one table during lunchtime, I couldn't help but notice the excitement in Penelope's eyes as she held a worn-out book in her hands. "What's that book you've got there?" Aiden asked, looking over at her. "It's the last known book of witches," Penelope said, beaming with joy.

I thought they said she does not remember things well, I can't even remember the exact book I was reading for her then. "No, I don't, do you? " I smile as I watch her lips curve into a wonderful smile. "Yeah, it's titled Help me escape. Have you forgotten?" "Oh, ma'am you still even remember the name of the book" I read that book for her all over again, she was so happy. By the time we were done, it was late in the Night. I had to call Leo to tell him where I was. Which he cared less about. When I was going, she gave me the book as her last gift on heart, then went to bed. I never knew that was the last time I would see her, she passed away overnight.

Which was exactly what we were doing. One last hurrah, one last time facing those that tried to kill us. Facing Six’s own brother. Brother versus brother, and by the end of the night, only one would walk away. It would be Six. It had to be Six. If it wasn’t, we were both dead and they won. They’d find Five and Seven and hunt them down next. However it went, that night was the end of the Cleaners. Quite possibly my last night on earth. I’d been living on borrowed time, anyway, and was actually, strangely, thankful for it. The things I’d experienced left scars and nightmares, but others were magical.

Yummy this was good as hell. "no that is each book but this last one is a cliff hanger and the last book. It ends with the death of a main character and I may lose money from this but if it does well I will probably make over two million",I look embarrassed as they all stared at me but holy shit were they impressed by the news. I held in a giggle as I kept eating while we talked. "why did you end it?", Dean asked wanting to know I guess he looked intrigued.

I read ' The Last Good Man ' by Patience Swift in my first year in college. What had attracted me to the book was the name - The Last Good Man. I couldn't agree more with Patience Swift that Sam was literally the last good man on earth because it was obvious that the earth was becoming something else. In fact, at the time, I concluded that he was the last man, the rest of us living on planet earth were animals, and the wild ones preyed on the domestic ones. It was evident in everyday life that there were two factions in the world; the predators, and the prey, and every prey was trying so hard to become a predator, while the predators were still on their toes, lest they fall from their status
