A portal into a world I’d only ever read about in books. Now, I found excuses and gaps in my timetable to sneak in here. The only place where the whispers and the glares stopped, where I could just shut my brain off in peace. “Hale!” The librarian’s voice made me jolt. “You need to leave.” She was an older lady with greying hair and large spectacles that magnified her hawk like eyes. She reminded me of the librarian from Monsters University. “Yes,” I said quickly, scooping the thick history textbook in my arms. “I’m leaving. Just putting this back.”

Kohen asked me instead of answering my question. “Man the library? Record the books? Memorize the titles?” Kohen snorted under his breath.“Typical answer of a simple-minded person like you.” “I'm sorry, Mr. Genius.”I scoffed at him and crossed my arms. “Librarians are one of the most dangerous jobs out there.” “But why?” “They know every person who borrows books from the library. They can easily memorize your name, your address, and the time you frequent there.”Jake answered instead of Kohen, and I suddenly felt stupid.

Dim overhead lights cast long shadows between the rows, and the air carried that comforting, dusty scent of old paper and leather bindings. Lila Harper had worked the late shift at the circulation desk for three semesters. At 29, she was the youngest full-time librarian on staff, with sharp hazel eyes, shoulder-length chestnut hair often twisted into a loose bun, and a body that her modest cardigans and knee-length skirts couldn’t quite hide. She knew every quiet corner of the building, including which sections offered the most privacy after 9 p.m.

Someone to help me hold some of these emotional burden. I locked my bike outside the library complex and went in, making sure to check around me. The Archives Unit was my best bet on getting more information about The circle. It was a separate and restricted section, away from the academic book section. I walked to the librarian’s desk. She was a sweet older woman with round glasses that always sat atop the bridge of her nose. “Good morning,” I greeted “I need some materials from the archives.” “Hullo,” she said smiling “what materials sweet child?”

When we had caught each other's eye it was lust at first sight, but nothing more. "I wish you the very best, Vada," I say and she nods. "I wish the same for you, Zarn. I will purchase one of your banners and I will wave it high during your fights," she says and I smile at her. ******* "Councilmen Hik, will see you now Lieutenant Zarn," the secretary says and I follow her down the hall. Anticipation is twisting up my insides, but I try to keep my face as neutral as possible as I walk behind the female.

A few unoccupied couches that appeared to be as old as the structure sat peacefully in front of the bookcases. "May I help you with something?" inquired an enormous ginger red-haired librarian, perhaps in her upper forties, standing behind a computer. Behind the wire-rimmed glasses, her face appeared nice and honest. Ben said, "Yes, Ma'am. We only need a minute or two on one of your PCs."

She got to the door quickly, the library wasn't a large one. "Found anything?" The thick, low voice of the librarian stopped her from pressing down the old, heavy doorknob. She turned and smiled at the old man, who was sitting at his table, a lantern on it and a scroll in his hand. "Sadly no, but perhaps tomorrow." Her voice was gentle and a tired smile was on her face. This Librarian was one of the few people that didn't think she was weird at all. In fact, the only people who thought her weird were the young ladies in love with her soon-to-be husband.

- I'll be training new recruits in the basements. - said Baruz, leaving the archive. The door slammed shut. The librarian, after standing for a while, took an armful of books and sat down at the computer. Without looking at the monitor, he quickly tapped on the keys. The noise of the cooler, the flickering of the monitor, such simple things, so quickly fit into the usual life. Modern technology, surrounded by old books. The present interacts with the past, seeking to avoid mistakes.

Since it was still day time, I knew I couldn't go to the gardens, I didn't have my usual jobs any longer as I would be serving the queen herself and so I made my way to the one place I knew there wouldn't be anybody, not even Merilyn, the library. This time around, I needed some time alone to collect my thoughts and get myself back together. I wasn't going to be reading any books, or at least that's what I thought. When I got there, as expected, there was only the Librarian. The Lycans never really cared about the books, I wondered why they needed a library in the palace. The Librarian was an old woman, she was a werewolf as wel
