But as I watched him fall into a deep, healing sleep, I looked out the window at the flashing light of the lighthouse beacon. It was a warning to ships to stay away from the rocks. It was a signal of danger. I looked at my hands, steady and strong. The war for the Phantoms wasn't over. It was evolving. Silas Thorne might be at the bottom of the channel, but the shadows he had left behind were long. And I knew that when we finally returned to Blackridge, it wouldn't be as the people we were when we left.

Leo was already asleep in a small bed by the window, the sound of the ocean acting as his lullaby. Lydia sat on the porch, looking out at the black water. The lighthouse beam swept across the waves, a long finger of white light cutting through the dark. It wasn't the violent white of the lab. It was a steady, rhythmic pulse. A signal. "Adrian?" Lydia asked. "Yeah?" "Do you think the Board... any of them... are still out there? Hiding?"

Its glass lantern house caught the first golden-orange rays of the descending sun, sparkling like a diamond. "Gabriel... it’s breathtaking," I whispered, stepping closer to the safety railing. The wind up here was stronger, tugging at my hair and cooling the lingering heat on my skin. "My grandfather built this lighthouse," Gabriel said, stepping up behind me. He didn't crowd me, but I could feel his presence like a warm shield against the wind. "He used to say that every island needs a light to show you the way home, no matter how lost you get at sea."

"Land. Thank God." I don't answer. My wheels are too busy turning. "Hold on ... That's it!" I jump up, and the boat rocks. "Careful!" Alec grabs the sides of the boat. "What's it?" I lick my lips, excitement making my hands shake. "Something you can only see in the dark ... there's a door ... your aim is not the object you seek, but the door it is behind."

He cursed his mother's dying wish for asking his father to marry that cursed woman. The woman that pretended to not want power until she birthed a son of her own. "Let us..." He is unable to finish his statement since he heard a loud sound in the other room. "It seems we are not alone." Holden says. “Hi.” Sirens two of them, even though they were in their human forms, he could tell they were sirens by scent. They had both adorned the sailor's clothes clearly stolen from one of the corpses in the ship. “Sleep and forget us.”

I asked. "This was going to be more difficult than I thought, why did I bring her here?" L asked. "Idiot!" I said as I looked at L. I turned and the mermaid was no longer there. "Where did she go?" I asked L. "She may be busy now, you know her name maybe some other time you can come to call out to her and listen to her siren," L said. "Her siren is like a drug, you get more and more addicted the more you listen to it. You have to be careful," L added.

Just as he lowered the binoculars… A light appeared at the top. One flash. Then another. Then a third. Henry closed his eyes. “It’s a signal.” Samuel looked at him. “What does it mean?” Henry answered without hesitation. “The Keepers are asking to board.” ⸻ Before anyone could respond, a small wooden rowboat emerged from behind the lighthouse. Only one person was inside. An elderly woman wearing a navy-blue coat. She rowed calmly toward the Sea Lark, as though the rough sea beneath her didn’t exist.

I saw him lighting another candle. I took a deep sigh. “Are you-” “Is the scent not that nice?” He cut me off. “Better if you’ll stop lighting another one doc, we're not summoning some devils to have our ritual with that bunch of candles.” I crossed my legs comfortably before presenting the innocent eyes and seducing lips. I’m obtainable seductive and siren inside out, I want to finish this man right here, right now. When would they give me a signal to kill him now? I’m running out of patience, tsk. Doc. Jairo Black, what did you do to make them think you were an enemy?

The key is hidden in a magnetic box attached to the underside of a crab trap on the dock. "Do you know how to drive this thing?" I ask as Cain starts the engine. "Basic principles." His confident handling of the controls belies his casual response. "My father taught me. We used to take fishing trips in the summer." We pull away from the dock smoothly, keeping to a slow speed that won't attract notice. Once we're clear of the harbor, Cain opens the throttle, and the boat slices through the gray-blue water toward the lighthouse point. The journey takes about twenty minutes, during which the lighthouse grows from a distant white spike to an imposing tower standing sentinel on the rocky cliff. F
