"High-frequency loop," Liam explained, picking a piece of lint off his sleeve. "It’s a basic feedback cycle. If you hit the 'call' button again, it might actually explode the battery. From here I can see the highway that runs around the city in the long Loop that gives it its name. Orange sodium-vapor lights dot the dark road in sporadic intervals. Cars whoosh past. On the other side of the Loop is the Barren and beyond that, the parts unknown. I sigh. Everywhere is home to someone. And mine is somewhere out in the darkness past the Barren in those parts unknown.

The moment I hit what should've been the first floor, I was yanked back up to the height of the 18th floor and dropped again, shooting past the 16th floor window. I was still falling. The ground surged up toward me again. Another harsh, static-filled flicker flashed. I was back up at the top and dropping all over again. This was in an infinite-fall death loop! I laughed out loud as I hurtled through the air. "It's a looped space! There's no exit! Whether it's the door or the window, it's all a dead end!"
