Lucien’s gaze dropped to it but he didn’t move. “You see?” he said quietly. “Even now, it answers to nothing but itself.” She clenched her fists until her nails bit into her palms. “Get out.” He regarded her for a long moment. Then, unexpectedly, he bowed his head. “I will. But before I do, hear this.” He reached into his cloak and placed a small object on her desk, a silver coin engraved with the symbol of scales. “When the world begins to weigh against you, remember which side you stand on. His eyes widened, and so did mine, he stared around the room like there was an extra figure somewhere hidden, and once he had convinced himself they weren't, he leaned forward once again. “The rogues were paid with coins stamped with the mint of a prominent council member!” He added, dipping his hands into his pouch. I stared keenly at him, a part of me not so surprised, I had been expecting such all along, Catherine wasn't so powerful to carry out all of those by herself. “What council member?” I tilted my brows, sitting uprightly on my chair and placing my thighs against the other. He pulled out a coin, pointing it towards my face, his eye almost bulging out from its socket.
