I fell to the glass floor, gasping as the power vanished, leaving me more alone than I had ever been.
"Maya is gone," the masked man said, walking toward me. "The mountain is ours now. And you... You are going to help us build the next world."
He gestured to a wall of monitors. On them, I saw the ridge. I saw the shadow dwellers being rounded up by the harvesters. And I saw the violet heart of the mountain beginning to dim, the light fading into a dull, lifeless gray.
"You lose," the man whispered.
I looked at the blackened scar on my arm. It was still warm. I looked at the man, and for the first time, I didn't feel anger. I felt a cold, predatory clarity.
