Just a dismissal. I pulled my knees to my chest, the metal of the mask biting into my palms. The ache in my heart was a jagged thing. I was terrified that he didn't love me—he loved the "Silver Winter." He loved the mystery of the mask, the power of the Northern Alpha, and the thrill of the chase.

He asked me. I shook my head. “It’s not important,” I said as I opened the red box. Inside was a beautiful masquerade mask. It was simple and pearl white on the right side. And on the other side, it looked like a butterfly. It was elegant and extravagant at the same time. “Put it on little one.” He said while putting on a mask that matched his black suit. “Thank you, Godric. This is all too nice.” We hugged one last time before dispersing from the small waiting room and into the grand ballroom.

He told her and noticed how she was still staring at that Skull Emblem of that mask. “It’s my favorite mask, there are only five masks which was made for five of us, it will protect you when you go out of the packhouse, you know, you are unmated with alpha and he has not marked you, so there are chances they will think of you as the rogue but they will know you are one of us because now you have this mask.” He described to her and she nodded and put on the mask on her face and now only her eyes could be noticed.

However, when he thought of the fact that Ryder had made this, especially for him, his heart softened, and the dissatisfaction vanished immediately. While Ryder put on the coat and boots, Jake fixed the mask on his face. The mask resembled a ball's mask. It was black with delicate ornaments made of clay and painted with golden paint. The mask covered most of the upper half of Jake's face, including half of his cheeks, but his jaw and lips were out in plain sight. Ryder had spent a lot of time on the internet searching for masks to find the right model, so it wouldn't be inconvenient for breathing and speaking, but she couldn't deny that this model was also chosen for other selfish reasons. I gasped and involuntarily pushed against his chest. "I love y—" I choked on the words, barely able to stop myself. My heart exploded in shock. My mask tumbled forward and I grabbed it quickly, pushing it back on my face. No! Dammit! I was doing so well! I felt Masquerade's fingers tighten. He drew his face near mine. "I know."

I'd dated models, actresses, women who made careers out of being beautiful, but none of them had stayed in my head like this masked stranger I'd met for less than five minutes. The door to VIP Room Three stood open, I stepped inside, but she wasn't there yet. I sat on the leather sofa, adjusting my cufflinks out of nervous habit. The door opened. Nyx stepped inside wearing black lace this time. The lingerie left even less to imagination than the crimson from last week. Her red hair cascaded over her shoulders in waves, and that jeweled mask caught the amber light. I couldn’t take my eyes off how stunning she looked in that lace.

“Why is it open?” My heart skipped. “I—I thought it was mine,” I said quickly. “I didn’t see the name. I’m sorry.” He looked at me, long and suspicious. “But my name is written there.” “I didn’t notice,” I said, forcing a small shrug. “I said I’m sorry.” A pause. Then— “What are you doing with a masquerade mask?” I asked casually. His expression changed instantly. Guarded. “I’m going to a masquerade party,” he said. “I need it.”

Also, the way he smelled. I stiffened. That scent. I knew that scent. It was him. Or at least, it smelled like him. The man from that night. The one who had haunted my thoughts ever since. Why does this giant smell so much like the stranger from that night but looks nothing like him? “If you give her to me,” the masked man continued, “I will marry her tonight and take her to my kingdom.” His kingdom? I couldn’t hold in my gasp. What the hell was happening? One second, I was being humiliated beyond belief, and now some masked giant wanted to claim me?

Emberlyn: The box sat on the seat between us. Jaxon opened it without any ceremonious movement. I looked down at what was inside and forgot whatever I'd been about to say because I was staring at the most gorgeous piece of attire for hiding one's identity. The mask was black velvet, shaped close, with lace framing the eye cutouts in a pattern that was so intricate it took a few moments to recognize that it was floral. It was geometric at the edges and from there slowly dissolving into a design more organic toward the centre.
