He sighed and brushed his hand in his hair the other hand resting in his pocket and he stopped smiling and said in a deep voice, “Seeing you now is risking my life, you know my first name and for the first time I am not afraid to take such a step.” He turned to me and this time he looked straight in my eyes and he continues, “I will try and come back here to see you. But if I can’t and you can recognize me without my mask when we meet once again, then I won’t hesitate to be yours forever. This I promise.”

We had weathered storms and overcome obstacles, emerging stronger and more resilient each time. But just when we thought we had conquered all challenges, fate had a new twist in store for us. One evening, as we were preparing for a glamorous charity event, a mysterious package arrived at our doorstep. It was an intricately decorated box with a handwritten note attached. Curiosity piqued, we opened the box to find a beautifully crafted mask, adorned with jewels and feathers. The note read, "An invitation to the Masquerade of Secrets. An evening of intrigue and revelations. Your presence is requested."

To her credit, she had managed to find one that was relatively lightweight but fit snuggly and did a pretty good job of rendering me unrecognizable. It was a Guy Fawkes mask, like the one from the movie 'V for Vendetta', all white with a big smile, curly mustache and thin goatee. My concern was less about them recognizing me through the mask and more about how to explain why I was wearing a mask at all. I hadn't spent a lot of time around male strippers, but I was pretty sure that they didn't normally wear masks. To address this, Rachel had come up with a pretty elaborate backstory.

Also, the way he smelled. I stiffened. That scent. I knew that scent. It was him. Or at least, it smelled like him. The man from that night. The one who had haunted my thoughts ever since. Why does this giant smell so much like the stranger from that night but looks nothing like him? “If you give her to me,” the masked man continued, “I will marry her tonight and take her to my kingdom.” His kingdom? I couldn’t hold in my gasp. What the hell was happening? One second, I was being humiliated beyond belief, and now some masked giant wanted to claim me?

Isla~ I hated masks. Not just because they itched or made it hard to breathe...or, worse, messed with my makeup, but because they were the perfect metaphor for everything I had grown to despise in this new world of mine: secrecy, deception, danger dressed in elegance. "Do we really have to wear these stupid things?" I grumbled, holding the ornate mask delicately between my fingers as the limo hummed smoothly beneath us. Dante didn't say anything right away. He was seated beside me in the back of the stretch limo, his posture relaxed as ever, one long leg casually draped over the other. He turned his head toward me, eyes gleaming with quiet amusement behind his unreadable expression.

When Vivienne opened her eyes, she realized that this mask was different from the one Damien had sent. “It’s a cat-mask,” Marcus explained while Vivienne felt where the mask covered the entire upper portion of her face, from her forehead to the apples of her cheeks. “I would have preferred a full-face, but that might have drawn more attention.” “What about you?” She wondered, and then scoffed when the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a plain black domino mask. The sort of basic affair you could get from any fancy dress shop. “Oh, come on–”

Anna's POV As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow across the city, I stood before the mirror, carefully adjusting the delicate mask that concealed my features. The anticipation coursed through my veins, mingling with a sense of excitement and apprehension. Tonight, Victor and I were invited to a masquerade ball, an event shrouded in mystery and whispered tales of a secret society. Dressed in an elegant gown that hugged my curves and cascaded in layers of midnight blue silk, I felt a flutter of nerves in my stomach. The air crackled with a palpable energy as Victor approached, his eyes widening with awe at the sight before him.

It's yours now. He dropped the note on the bed and took the mask. The material was very light and silky on the inner layer, making it tolerant for him and would cover his whole face. Wouldn't show how hideous he was. He hadn't thought of what to wear. It was a masquerade party with rich moguls and bigwigs with celebrities showing up too. Arc wondered if it'd be like the books he read. He doubted it.

A strange feeling overcame him as he rummaged through the various garments hidden underneath the bed, as if he knew deep down that something was amiss. As he probed deeper, he felt something hard and cold brush against his fingers. He frowned, his curiosity piqued, and gently pulled out the object. Instantly, his eyes widened with shock as he gazed upon the familiar mask. It was the very same one the enigmatic Mask Princess wore, its intricate design leaving him breathless.

Elena's POV The mask was a delicate, laser-cut piece of obsidian lace that felt like a spider clinging to my face with cold, spindly legs. It obscured my eyes, casting the world into a fractured, shadowy peripheral where every guest looked like a potential executioner. In the mirror, I didn’t recognize the woman staring back. The dress for tonight was a deep, blood-red velvet—a color of passion, or perhaps a color of warning. It was heavy, the skirt rustling with a low, ominous sound every time I moved, echoing the frantic, erratic throb of my heart.
