“There’s something else.” I followed him curiously, our hands intertwined. We walked past the living room, down a hall, and stopped at one of the large sliding glass doors. Outside, right in the open courtyard, a huge decorated box stood in the center. “What is that?” I asked, blinking at it. “Just watch,” Edward said. The moment I took another step, the box popped open. A shower of pink and brown balloons flew into the air, floating gently upward. As the last balloon rose, something shiny appeared behind them. My breath caught in my throat.

Closing his eyes, Mircus took a deep breath. “I have no choice,” he said quietly. He murmured another spell. A small black box appeared in his palm, carved with strange symbols that pulsed faintly as if alive. He opened it slowly and placed the hair inside. When he shut the box, it locked itself with a soft click. Mircus stared at it for a moment longer. “I hope he dont find out…” he whispered, swallowing hard, “…he will never forgive me.” He handed the box to the bird.

It pulled toward the box like it had found something familiar. I knew this was it. This was what we came for. The box wasn’t locked with keys. It was sealed with magic—strong, ancient magic. The kind that could only be undone by blood and spellwork. My blood. I took the small dagger Morgana had given me. Its silver blade reflected the glow of the symbols. I cut a shallow line across my palm and let the blood drip onto the box. As soon as my blood touched it, the box shook. The symbols flashed bright purple.
