A psychotic smile spread across his lips. "You monster! You've lost your senses!" I yelled, my vision blurred by my own tears, but he cackled instead, filling the quiet room with the echo of his voice. "You're right about one thing, I am a monster, the kind who lives under your bed and creeps up at night to watch you sleep, devouring you slowly. And trust me sweetheart," he leaned over, his heavy musk almost choking me. "I won't stop until I've stripped you of every innocence."

They always say don’t joke about the thing under the bed. Like if you talk about it too much, it’ll crawl out. But I’ve never been the kind of girl who listens. Especially not with my legs spread and my fingers soaked, whispering, "If you're real, come out and fuck me already." It started as a joke. The kind of thing I’d say after too much wine and not enough dick. Some dumb fantasy about a monster under the bed—big, rough, inhuman. Something that didn’t care about manners or consent or dinner dates.

If anyone walks in, I could pretend to be making the bed, I think to myself. Quietly I pad across the floor and lift the mattress of the bed. The book falls with a soft thud to the frame of the bed. Reaching under the bed I grasp the book in my hand and the symbols glow brightly as they change shapes into letters that I can read. 'Prophecies of the Fae.'

I asked, concerned as I wondered what made that sound. The slight movements under the bed caught my attention, along with small flashes of light. “Huh?” I said, getting on all fours as I bent to inspect what was under the bed. I was greeted with a blinding light that seemed to come from a book. “Grimoire?” I called out as I was blinded by the light that came from the book. “Is that you? Are you trying to kill me?” But that emotion was put on hold when I realized that Grimoire might be scared. It took a while for my eyes to adjust; it was by a miracle I wasn’t blinded.

When she arrived my mother kissed my forehead and left with my father. The sun hadn’t set yet so I asked Rose to go for a walk with me. She agreed and we took off into the woods behind my house. I got ahead of her and then made her think she had lost me. While she frantically looked for me I snuck behind her. I found a large piece of wood and crept up behind her. She heard the brush below my feet break as I approached her and quickly turned around. I then unleashed the Monster inside me. It was brutal and very sloppy. I honestly

"Searching for information about monsters, did you know they live under your bed" she says making the little guy scream with fear and for her to laugh. "Hey not fair!" he says hurt, but he decided to tease her back. "It's not me who's dreaming about monsters, he lives under your bed" he says sticking his tongue out at her. She just giggles ignoring his teasing, pulling him up with her, going to get some blocks out to play with.

For a second , I’m hit with the familiar knife-twist ; the helplessness of knowing I can fight everything except the monsters in his head . “Monster under the bed.” “No monsters tonight. I checked. Triple-checked.” I say it softly, like a spell , rocking him on the glider, humming the dinosaur song he loves . His breathing evens out slowly , each inhale softer than the last until his small fingers relax against my shoulder . I press my cheek to the top of his curls , letting the warmth of him settle something frayed and shaking inside me .

“How are you getting something to eat?” “I broke into the candy machine, and the drinking fountain has water.” “Does the monster know you’re in here?” “I dunno, it never comes here.” “Where does it go?” “Sometimes it slides on the street. Sometimes it crawls in the grass.” “What does the monster do?” “It slides and eats stuff. It ate a squirrel. The squirrel tried to get away, but the monster crawled over it, and it was gone.” “Have you been anywhere else downtown?” “I wanted to go to the grocery store, but I’m too afraid. The monster will get me.”

I'm so distracted by my thoughts that I don't notice that there's something just under my bed until I accidentally kick it. What was that? It was hard. I get on my knees and look. My eyes find a book, leather-bound and thick, yet small compared to the others. I know this book. It's the one that got me suspended for two weeks. The book about the Emberborns.
