We cut through and get out.” Simple. Brutal. The only chance we had. The first monster lunged, bursting through a bookcase with a screech that rattled the glass in the windows. Its face was a grotesque smear of features—mouth too wide, teeth crooked like shards of glass, eyes empty hollows rimmed with gold.

Before my fingers even reached it, the book opened by itself. Just like it always used to whenever a new page filled up. My chest tightened. The page was blank for two seconds. Then words began to form. Like invisible ink deciding to show itself. {Your vampire side is not dead son.} I swallowed. {I believe you assumed it died but it is not.} My fingers curled into fists. {Your inner monster is in a deep slumber.} My breath grew heavier. {Use your fire to bring it back to life.}

“My life is the stories I tell. And I want this story to be free.” Suddenly, the ground shook. The Paper Monster had crash-landed in the park—now twenty feet tall, a twisting mass of sharp paper and black ink. “The script must be finished!” the monster bellowed. He lunged for the Woman. Maya jumped in the way, and the silver locket flared with purple light. She raised it and a shield of energy blocked the monster’s path. “Go! Write the ending!” Maya yelled back. The Woman dropped to the grass, grabbed her pen, and started writing. Her hand shook, but her eyes were firm.

I pulled his hand toward my chest, letting him feel the steady, frantic beat of my heart. "We’re writing a new story now, Julian," I said, my voice barely a whisper over the sound of the waves. "In this story, the monster saves the queen, and the queen... she shows the monster that he was always a king in disguise. You're in every chapter from here on out."

“Great.” As soon as Zack’s voice fell, Monster raised his pistol and aimed it at Old Man Zack’s head. He smiled in a flatteringly demonic manner. “Then, let me test which one’s quicker, your agility or my gun.” After finishing his sentences, Monster pulled the trigger. Zack stroked both of his hands in front of his chest, and immediately, a hurricane was formed on the flat ground. All the computer desk equipment flew toward Monster. Monster was so stupefied that his pupils dilated. Old Man Zack’s internal strength was so mellow and rich that it made him gasp in amazement.
