Luciano – POV I stormed into the library like the walls themselves owed me something. The door slammed behind me, the echo ricocheting off the shelves like a warning. I didn’t stop walking until I reached the bar cart, snatched the decanter of whiskey with one hand and poured straight into the glass with the other. Too slow. I cursed, tossed the glass across the room, and drank straight from the bottle. One swallow. Two. Three. Fire poured down my throat, but it did nothing to drown the heat already roaring through me.

“What’s your poison?” The Dark Night heir eyed her. She didn’t smile; however, she also kept the sneer from her face which seemed to prompt his answer. “Whiskey.” Maddie called the bartender over and pointed to one of the aged single malt whiskey bottles on the top shelf. His face lit up as he accepted her order and made the drink. “Just a house whiskey is fine. I don’t need expensive things like you, Princess.” Michael grunted. Maddie barked a laugh. That pub was the only place she splashed her cash, and it wasn’t because she preferred the finer tasting liquor. “Would you deny this fine establishment my father’s money?” She asked.

Snow jumps free from my arms the moment we enter, circling my feet like she’s scolding me for leaving. I collapse onto the bed, staring up at the ceiling as everything I’ve been carrying tries to catch up with me. I let myself breathe. I head downstairs, the house quiet enough that my footsteps echo. All I want is something strong to burn away the heaviness sitting on my chest. At the liquor shelf, I grab a bottle of whiskey, the expensive one I save for bad days and a glass. As I’m about to pour, Helen walks in, tying her scarf. “Ma’am, I’ll be heading out now,” she says gently.

UNKNOWN POV The night grew more profound as I took another sip of whiskey from the crystal glass in my hand. No matter how much I drank, this liquor could never get me drunk. I sat in my prized black leather chair, the dimly lit room illuminated only by the desk lamp in the corner.
