In a whisper, as she watched Adham and Nelly entering the water, Naomi said, “Tonight at ten we’ll be at the nightclub. You can come. If Adham doesn’t invite you, it’s only because he’s too kind. I want to see you—maybe we can enjoy another night.” She smiled with quiet confidence. “Good,” Adel said. “I’ll be there.” He smiled back. In the water, Adham and Nelly swam close together. Nelly swam while watching Adham, who swam without looking at her, unaware of her gaze. Suddenly, Nelly screamed and stopped swimming. Adham turned back toward her. Nelly was looking down, crying. He swam closer, placed his hand on her shoulder, and asked, “What’s wrong?”

Kyliena. The night was cool, the silence it brought seemed to swallow this side of the world whole. The sort that flaunted the millions of stars in the sky like diamonds floating in a sea of deep blue. Shoving my hands into the pockets of my ripped jeans, I stepped out of my grandparent’s house into the night. Again I was leaving the house without saying a word to my grandparents who were sound asleep in their beds. It has been a week since that boy that looks so much like Niklaus carried me out from deep within the forest.

~Cadence’s Point of View~ Last night was one of the longest damn nights of my life. Even throwing back seven beers didn’t get me drunk enough to forget the visuals of my “mates” swimming around in my mind. Their lips on me, their naked bodies. Fanny damn near killed me with all the flashes she put in our head.

“So, movie?” ********************* “NIKOLAY!” I laughed as my husband lifted me in his arms inside the water. He had been doing so for a while now, the two of us decided to go on a midnight swim, not the best option if you were asking me as the water was freezing cold and the two of us were well aware that sharks could roam the water. But my love being the security expert he was, he hired three fishermen boats which could track the sharks and keep them away from the perimeter before they managed to cross a certain invisible border which he drew.

She then began to look for a way to open the skylight. She looked under the bed for a remote that might have dropped, but could not find it. She then searched the dresser, recliner, and closet, but still, nothing was found. She soon began to touch the small buttons on the windowsill. She heard a soft hum and looked around to see what had changed. A beam of light shot from her right and it began to grow. Hae Mina stepped back and watched the walls retract and reveal the night and ocean. She climbed on the sill and used the headboard to rest her back on as she watched the moonbeams dance on the waves.

“What’s going on out here?” The girl, her voice eerily calm, answered. “My name is Nadia,” she said. “My parents put me here when I was six… after I drowned my baby brother.” Ben felt the blood drain from his face. “He didn’t deserve a life when my kittens didn’t,” she whispered. “I just wanted him to feel the pain I felt.” Nadia looked around the dark woods nervously. “Once a month, the guards let some of us out… We get to roam the grounds. Sometimes, people like you come. Most of us just watch. But some… they hurt people. Willy and Sue — they’re out there now. They were watching you.”

“Okay. We’ll be more careful.” I rolled my eyes… **** ***** we ate dinner After dinner, Mom clapped her hands with excitement. “Tonight is family swim night! We spent so much money on that pool outside—it’s time we actually use it properly.” **** The backyard pool looked luxurious under the evening lights—heated water, LED strips glowing along the edges, and a built-in sound system. Expensive didn’t even begin to cover it. Mark had the music playing—smooth R&B with sensual beats that vibrated through the water.

Nothing. The silence became unbearable. Finally, sometime past midnight, I gave up trying to sleep altogether. A swim suddenly sounded like the only thing capable of calming my thoughts. I slipped into my swimsuit, draped a robe over myself, and quietly slipped out of the room. The large pool lay still, as if waiting for me. I removed the robe and plunged into the water. The warmth and freshness enveloped my skin. I swam through it, savoring the water’s embrace as it flowed around my body.
