Zoey’s face flashed in my mind, her soft smile, the small life growing inside her. My hand tightened into a fist. I could not, would not, let this threat come near her.
“Double the patrols tonight,” I told Ronald quietly. “Silent rotation. No gaps, no excuses. If anything moves out there, I want to know before it breathes.”
He nodded, his usual sarcasm stripped away. “Consider it done.”
We reached the watchtower at the edge of our land just as a low fog began to roll in from the river. The moonlight turned it silver, eerie and beautiful, but I felt no wonder, only the crawling awareness that something unseen was already moving within it.
