I had another hour before my next class so I just decided to go to the library and wait there because staying in one place somehow eases the pain. I walked into the library with a cup of black coffee in my hand. I walked to a quiet and secluded place and sat on a chair. I took a deep breath as I drank from my coffee. I took out my favorite book, The Notebook, from my bag and placed it on the desk. I can't count the number of times I had read the book. It has so much behind it, love, pain, sorrow, loss and grief. I cried the first time I read the book. I also cried the first time I watched the movie.

Before I run my fingers across the books, I notice that there is a notebook specially kept. This notebook has a leather cover and looks different from other items in this room. I do not know why, but I can sense that it is a precious thing for its owner and it is well-kept. I really want to open it. Maybe because I am a human, a curious human. But my fear controls me not to open the notebook. Otherwise, I will be killed by Mr. Barnett, the owner of the notebook.

The nineteenth notebook has been open since February — since the argument sentence, since the fourth book's first pages. It is the fullest notebook of the run: forty-four years of practice have produced a year's worth of writing that requires more pages than any previous year. She opens it to the annual review page. November. The forty-fourth review. The same November morning that has been the same November morning for forty-four years and is never quite the same. November. The forty-fourth review.

Opened the notebook. Kept going.

Then she narrowed her eyes toward me. “You startled me.” Guilty people always reacted exactly like that. My eyes drifted toward the notebook. Then my smile widened considerably. Because now I definitely wanted to read it. Very badly. I moved quickly. One hand smoothly wrapped around the notebook. Then I effortlessly removed it from her grasp. The shocked expression that followed nearly destroyed my remaining self-control. “Give that back Lukas.” I ignored the demand completely. Then I casually opened the notebook. I began reading. The deeper I read, the more entertained I became.

Not for the FBI. Not for Victor. For me. Victor’s voice echoed in my head again. *Then decide who you believe.* I looked down at the container again. The rest of the files were being catalogued now. Removed one by one. Handled with gloves. Placed into evidence bags. Structured. Controlled. But the notebook— The notebook felt different. Agent Bennett noticed. Her gaze settled on it. “That will need to be processed.” I didn’t respond immediately. My fingers tightened slightly.

"Through writing.] -- Mallory was led towards a small cabin deeper inside the underground forest. It looked abandoned, and as expected, it was dusty and dirty outside. The cabin contained the basic necessity for it to be called a comfortable home. A bed, a kitchen, a table and chairs, and a bookshelf. Mallory looked at the bookshelves, and one caught her attention. It was a notebook. Unlike others which were created beautifully, it was a notebook that looked like it had faced hardship in its whole life.
