My gaze drifted away from Lucas without me intending to.
Then I saw it.
Or rather, what was left of it.
My notebook.
The cover had curled inward from the heat, its edges blackened and brittle. When I picked it up, flecks of ash drifted from its surface and disappeared onto the floor without a sound.
I turned it over slowly.
Not long ago, those pages had been packed with lecture notes, work schedules, grocery lists, half-finished ideas, and thoughts I’d never trusted anyone else to read.
